Post Stock Wheels- How big can they go?

Currently I have a 4x2 with the stock 16x7 Lariat wheels. I am planning on installing a 3" spindle lift but was wondering if 285/75/16's will fit on the stock 16x7 rims? Are the wheels too narrow for the tire? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
RBF

I believe that most of the members will agree that 285-75-16 will fit on the factory wheels with no problems, however you will hear a few people say that it is a little narrow a wheel and might cause the tire to feather. I can say however that I have a 4x2 sc flareside at factory height with 285-75-16 tires. There is no rubbing on anything, this includes mudflaps and on lock to lock turns. The truck looks like it should've from the factory IMHO.
Good Luck

TJohnston,

You have 285's on your 2x4 with no lift, wow! That's impressive, didn't know they could fit without rubbin. Could you send me a pic of your truck, I'd love to see it, thanks. mudder46@hotmail.com

Mudder, I would love to send you some pics, however I can't do it electronically as my Internet access is at work and we don't have a digital camera or a scanner. I would however send you some pics if you will scan them in for me...

Question

What brand of tire do you have? I thought the largest that would fit on a 4x2 was 265/75/16 tires. I have a 97 reg cab 4x2 and was told by a local tire store that this was the max size. But if you did it, it can obviously be done. thanks

Extinguisfire,
you answered your own question about his tires not rubbing and yours rub. You have aftermarket rims that are probably the wrong offset or a different offset which will cause your tires to rub and not his.

Question

Well the only difference the offset makes is that they stick outside the fender a bit. Now if they were the regular offset as on factory rims then they would be inside the fender well more than mine our now. Now in saying this my tires rub a bit on the stabilizer bar if I were to turn real tight going at a higher speed than normal. And since I don't do that it doesn't cause me much of a problem. Also if I were to turn into a parking lot where the entrance was a high inclined the wheel on the inside of the turn would rub on the wheel well plastic cover. And of course this is all with a lift so I am sure that without the lift a stock 2wd with stock rims would rub in these two locations. If anybody else thinks this way speak up.

Question

TJohnston,

well I have a 98 2wd STX with the 17" rims. I just put on a 3" spindle lift with a 1.5" block in back. I also went with some aftermarket rims, 16x8 atlas, and 285/75/16 bfg's at ko's and even with the lift the tires rubbed a bit on the plastic rocker panel covers before I trimmed them. I am not calling you a liar but I just don't see how the set-up you speak of works. I won't believe till I see it.

i agree. i have a friend with a 4wd f-150 with 285/75/16's. we put his wheels/tires on my truck to see if they would fit w/o rubbing. unfortunately, they did not work.
