Question Wanting to go from 17's to 16's anyone "downgrade" before?

I have the 265/70r17 wranglers AT/S on the stock alloy wheels. They have less than 1100 miles on them and I'm realizing that in the area that i live in in need/want a more aggressive tire. After some searching i'm concluding that my only alternative it to go w/ a 16 or 16.5 in order to get superswapers or even pro-comp mud TA or BFG mudders.
I can get any of those in a 8 or 10 ply and with the over abundance of mesquite around here I haven't tried to venture off road yet.

I called discount and they said that their systems shows that you can only run 17's on those trucks because when the factory upgraded they also changed the caliper size. I think he's full of it but I intersted to know if anyone has done the same.
I need some help on this. If it can be done I'll sell this set up and go w/ the superswampers.

Since we both have the f-150 there can't be any up grade in payload, in theory.
i'd call ford but they couldn't even tell me what size the rear diff was and whether or not it was siliconed or had a gasket.
I just want to sell em' and good with something I can run out in the desert and not have to worry about flats. I'm itchin' to go but I have to wait.

I went from the stock 17's to Centerline 16X8 on my '98 with no problems. I don't know about 99's or 2k's though.

Guy at work just took delivery of his 2000 expy with the upgraded 16 alloys and tires. He's entertaining the thought of a direct swap for my 17" ORP alloys and tires. Anybody know the specs on the two wheels and if they are a direct swap? I believe the 17" wheels are 7.5" wide and the 16's are 7" wide. True? And I don't know if the backspace/offset are the same? On my traded 97 I believe the wheels were 7" wide and I put 285's on them without any trouble and didn't really mind the look. Are we talking the same thing with the expy wheels looks wise? Any help would be appreciated. Also thinking of selling him my factory AM/FM CD for $200. Is it a direct replacement for his or are they different? Thanks.

I went from the factory 17's to a 285 on a 16x8. I love my new wheels and tires.

I too intend to change my OEM 17's and the Goodyears. If BFG doesn't come out with a 17" equivalent to the 285/75/16 then I will go to the 16's if I can. I am attemting to locate whatever web page I saw this info on but for now will have to go by memory alone; which is poor at best, lol... I seem to remember when researching Ford trucks on the web before my purchase that with some option on these trucks ( I think it's the 7700 lbs. payload package) that you get a bigger axle housing, larger diameter rotors, and one or two other things. The larger diameter rotors would preclude you from going back down to 16's I think. But on the normal payload trucks I believe (and hope) it's still possible. And yeah, those goodyears are a tad slick for me too. 900 miles on the truck and I already want to ditch 'em.

Oops... Just found this...
7700 Payload Group (X-Cab Styleside SB/Reg Cab Styleside LB) NOTE: This package replaces the F-250 LD line. Includes GVWR of 7700 lbs and maximum payload of 1830 lbs. Includes heavy duty components, larger brakes, higher capacity 7-lug wheels, heavy duty frame, HD shocks and springs,HD electrical/cooling pkg, 72-amp HD battery, super engine cooling and auxiliary
transmission oil cooler. REQUIRES 99L or 99M. NOT AVAILABLE with 99W, X27,
XH9, X19, bonus discount with 4.2L engine (992), special discount with manualtrans and A/C, 94S, 94T, T65, T53, 55R, 622, 623.

Still haven't found the one that specifically stated the sizes of these upgrades but it's out there somewhere. Will post it if I find it.
