Cool More tires for the mileage?

Hey fellas, I own a '97 F150 4x4 ext., and have the Good Year RT/S P255-70R16. Not very pleased with them as they have lost a lot a tread in the short time and miles that I have had them.
Any suggestions on a tire with more stamina, I am beginning a new job and would like them to last the run it's going to take to work and back.
All the off-road I get is during duck season on farm roads,(mud, wet pastures), nothing real agressive, but would be comforted to know that the meat is there when I need to get up a hill or out of a bog.
Any hints on taller tires would help also.
I know that prob. opens a whole new can of worms.
Thanks in advance for the help.

I've got a 98 4x4 with 39,000 on those same tires and have around 15,000 left to go on them. I have had the truck for 1 winter and feel that they too, are not adequate for traction. They don't have any bite on them like you said, but they will probubly out last bigger lugged tires on the highway. My dad had some radial rovers and they only lasted about 40,000. I was thinking of BFG-All Terrains in the LT265-75-16 size. If you go bigger than that, you will notice a difference when towing on the highway. One thing you have to remember when getting different tires, what percentage of the time am I going to need that bigger or extra traction.

265/70/R17 RT/S with 47000 miles on them. Five tire rotation to take care of them around every 5000 miles. Very durable but not too good traction when wet. We don't have to worry about winters here in the tropics. And I prefer BFGoodrich overall.

I am ready to change mine at almost 50K or before.

I'm really puzzled at all of the complaints over the RT/S series tires. While I've only got 10K on mine -- they seem ok -- clearly no obvious or blatant problems.

Question: Are all the complaints with the P-series (as opposed to the LT-series)?

From Goodyear's own specs on their site, there's little except the tread pattern that is truly cross-cutting in detail.

I always skip the 5k rotation so as to see how the tires are wearing -- and the outer-edge feather-edging indicates to me that the front-end has too much toe-in (will be checked next week).

It does look like at about half-worn, the sipes disappear -- which is good for mileage, but could explain the wet-weather complaints.

I think my '97 had Wrangler AP's (what's that about the first to go??) -- and at 42K (trade in), they clearly had worn only half-way. I didn't think that was too bad.

Any comments or amplification?

If you have the $$ get some superswampers on steal wheels for the hunting season, and then swap back to some BFG's AT for the rest of the boring year.
Nothing like getting muddy and having fun. Eating your dinner after you've procured it is something I still enjoy.

Thumbs up

Thanks for responses, good idea on the extra tires for hunting, thought about that, any suggestions on long lasting tires, in the 265 70 16 range? Main use is for highway driving. I'm new to the P/U4x4 life. She's my work transp and I'd like to get reccomendations from experience, not salespersons.

I have a set of Michelin XC LT4's on my explorer and I LOVE them. They have almost 30K on them and still look like new tires with all the tread. They ride great, not noisy and hold the road even in wet weather. I don't get in the mud too often so I don't need a mud tire.

BTW, I hate my General A/W 265/60/17 that are on my F150, I get alot of sidewall flex in a curve and they squeel (not an alignment problem) they slip at the slightest moisture on the road. And! ! ! ! no matter what I try, the white letters won't get white.
