17x10 or 17x8 wheels for 35" tires?
I am looking to get the Weld SS StoneCrusher wheels for my '04 and I am looking for some help on selecting the wheel width. They are offered in 17x10 and 17x8s. I want to put either the ProComp 35x12.5x17 ATs on or the BFG 315/70/17 TA KOs. the ProComps can have a wheel width from 8-10" and the BFGs from 8.5-10". Is a wider or narrower wheel better? Why? All opinions are welcome. Thanks.

people say the Daystar will work for 35 inch tires. while that may be true for street driving, I need more clearance than someone saying "it fits" when I am off road. i want a real suspension lift. whether i can afford one is another story. i am hoping to have Off Road Unlimted take care of the lift like they did on the 2004 F-150 their general manager owns. check out the "in progress" pics here (look under the Projects link on the left side). i saw the truck nearly finished at the off-road expo. this is what it looked like.

packager_jr, I've drooled over your truck gallery before, so I think I will probably go with the 10s when the time comes. there are no suspension lifts available yet except for custom jobs, so I will probably have to wait anyway. and the price difference from the 8s to the 10s is only $34 each so not too bad. as i've said before, nice truck.

I guess I'll throw in my $.02 worth. I work for a manufacturer who does a lot of work in the performance wheel industry and I can tell you that the main difference you will see is the fact that the 8" wide rim will have a different profile then the 10". I personally prefer the 8" because it helps protect the edge of the rim from damage from rocks and other stuff.
Also of note, I have talked with many people who own the Weld Crusher series who have had serious issues keeping them clean. This stems from the way their simulated beadlock is crimped onto the rims outer lip. It allows a small gap between this and the rim shell that can fill with water and debris. I have also heard that they make an unusual noise when going down the road but I can't see how that would happen and have had no way to confirm it. Good luck.

I couldn't afford the Stonecrusher's, so I did the next best thing. I purchased the Eagle Alloy 102's, which is a copy. Mine are 16x10 with 4 1/2 inches of backspacing.

So far I love them. This is my second set. I originally had a set of 058's (589's) but sold them to a friend and bought these. The 102's are a one piece cast aluminum, polished (no clearcoat) wheel. The similated beadlock is actually molded into the lip of the rim instead of a seperate piece like the Weld Stonecrusher. This eliminates the problem of the Stonecrusher's "creaking" noise and the debries getting trapped. I'm sure it is also a lot cheaper to manufacture also. I know they are not as strong as the forged Weld wheels, but they are a lot cheaper. I beleive the Eagle wheels are a very good value. I also noticed that Eagle makes the 102 and 101 in a 17x9 and 18x9.5 inch size (with a 6x135mm bolt pattern) for the new F-150 and Expys. Which size are you considering.

i'm looking at the 17x9s since i want to put BFGs or ProComps on. I will probably go with the BFGs just because they are tried and true good tires and a little cheaper than the ProComps. I don't doubt that the ProComps are great tires though. i can't decide on the 101 or 102. I keep clicking back and forth on the page trying to see which one I like more. Now I think the 102s look really cool too. AH! decisions. oh well, i have to wait until early next year until the lift kit will be available, so I can't buy wheels and tires until I lift it and i have time to think about it.
as far as strength goes, i know the forged are stronger, but what difference does that make? i mean, they will never see their limit on the truck. they are rated around 2100 lbs, so on 4 wheels that is 8400lbs. since the truck only weighs 5000 pounds, there's no way i will appraoch that limit. it can haul 1750lbs, and put 4 fat people in the truck at say, 300lbs each, for a total of 1200lbs and you still aren't at the weight limit. it is all rough estimation, but what would be the advantage of having a stronger wheel? thanks for you input wandell. (and thanks for possibly saving me $800 if I indeed buy Eagle Alloys instead of Weld.)

Brewmaster,
Thanks for the compliment. I'm sure your ride will turn out real nice once you get it where you want.
One hint: Try looking for wheels on Ebay. I bought mine from this guy named "weldracing" for $865 (center caps included, to my door) brand new. 4WP wanted like $300 per wheel. In no way am I an Ebay junkie but $865 for 4 17x10 Welds is a steal in my opinion. Good luck -

I don't think strength will be an issue with a 1/2 ton truck, especially with only a 33 or 35 inch tire. The only bad thing about the Eagles is they are an uncoated polished wheel, but I beleive the Weld Stonecrusher is also. They require some regular polishing to keep them looking good. I polish mine with Blue Magic every 4 to 6 weeks usually. I have never talked to anyone who has had anything bad to say about Eagle Alloys. Oh, I'm sure your truck is gonna look great lifted. I really love the few lifted 04's I've seen. I know you can't wait. Heck, I can hardly wait to SEMA. I'm sure there are gonna be lifted 04's everywhere.
