I just took my speedo gear into the ford dealership. The stock gear on the truck was a yellow 18 tooth gear. I have a 3.08 axle ratio on a 97 4x4. I told the parts guy that when my speedometer read 65 i was really doing about 73 or so. He told me that i need to go to the 21 tooth gear. What i have read so far leads me to believe that he went the wrong way. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Eric

Matt, well, i checked the inner door panel and it gave me an axle code of 18 which i have learned means i have the 3.08. Thanks for explaining the speedo. I'll call the dealership tomorrow and tell them to go the other way. Thanks

iridektm, hey did you do that airbox mod yet? Just got my K&N installed this morning. Man even better! You can really feel the difference. For the torque issue, I still have the factory exhaust. the truck when you get on it about 1/4 throttle from a stop, you can hear the tires fighting for traction. These are brand new BFG Ats also. So the torque is still there for me. And with the taller tires, I dont have to shift as quickly to get moving. I have not tried towing, maybe this next week. But it is a 2000lb fish and ski boat 17" aluminum. I pulled it with a 4.0L ranger without issues, so I dont see much trouble with the 150.

No I haven't done the airbox mod yet. I have been really busy. I am hoping to try it soon. What you say about how your engine responds leads me to believe that I need to look into some things. I have read other post about it being neccesary to rplace the fuel filter often. I have had my "check engine" light come on when towing and that seems to be a popular issue here. Some one had mentioned some things about oxygen sensors also. I am going through way too much oil (not out the pipe). This started about the time I switched to Mobile 1 at 50,000. Somebody mentioned valves. I think I need to start with some tune up items like fuel filter, maybe plugs, etc. before I bring it in for a diagnostic test. Any suggestions?

I've got a '97 f150 4.6L 4WD w/AOD. Gearing is OEM 3.55, 8.8, and 285x75x16s. Exhaust is Flowmasters with the resonator removed. I moved from 245's to 285's--after that, I installed in a weekly sequence: K&N, TB, exhaust, MAF. Passing actually feels better anywhere after 2nd gear, or ~>35mph than anytime before with the OEM setup. I have been pleased with every mod except the MAF. If it accomplished anything, I don't feel it. The best single add in my opinion was the TB, but again, only in the range of 35-75mph. The larger tires definitely hurt torque.

Well I finally got out a pulled my boat yesterday. IT is a 100 mile round trip. Took about 1/2 tank to get there and back, kind of what I expected. So about 12 mpg. But it up hill the whole way there and mostly down hill on the way back. I also had a 15mph headwind there and back. That sucked!
Anyways power was fine. 5th gear was about useless unless it was level or downhill. But 4th pulled really well, no issues. I was kind of odd cause about after a few miles of leaving the truck in 5th, it seemed to gain power. Like the computer was learning. Kind of odd.
I think that when I get a chance and $$$, I may look into 4.10 gears since pulling is what we will be doing with the truck most of the time. I am sure it would not hurt, but help milage when pulling also. Maybe a larger TB and catback exhaust would help instead of gears.
All in all, it did really well. Pulled straight, no issues.

How exactly do these chips recalibrate the speedo? Isn't there some cheaper way of doing this as with the 97's? I was thinking of buying a "chip" some time down the road anyway but right now I just don't have the $$$. I'm not so worried about the speedo. I'm more concerned that if I wait to long to install the chip my mileage will be off.

I went to Hypertechs website and found out they don't make a programmer for the 99-00 F-150's yet! Anyone have an idea when they might come out? They have one for the 2000 SuperDuty Powerstroke AND the 2000 GM trucks. Why don't they have one for the better selling F-150's?
