Question No lift... Will 285/75/16 have enough room?

I have been wanting to increase tire size from my stock set-up 265/70/17. I do like to off road occassionally, and I'm curious if a stock suspension provides enough clearance for 285/75/16. Any info and pics would be greatly appreciated...

Cool

I have 285's on my stock 4x4 and the tires have NEVER rubbed, even off-road. You will be ok, no worries. Here is a couple pics:

Mudder!!
Nice truck! Thanks for your help. Have you ever considered a supercharger? I really like my 17" wheels, it's very difficult to find tires for 4x4's with 17 inchers, I was told that the mfg's should be supplying more options in the future, but for now it's very limited. I think I'll just go with 16's.

"""I was told that the mfg's should be supplying more options in the future, but for now it's very limited"""

i was told this 2 years ago when i started looking at f150 4x4s. the problem is that the 17" stock wheels are only like 7" wide so if BFG were to make bigger wider tires i think they will look a little akward because of the wheel width.

i too am in the process of getting some 285 (or 295) 75-16s on some 16x8 wheels. i drove an Integra before my truck and on the import scene your SUPPOSE to get a larger wheels but now i find myself going down in size to get a better tire selection...

Thumbs up

Abel,
My friend has a 2000 150 with the 16" wheels and he has 305/70/16 Goodyear mud- terrains on it. I don't see why you couldn't do the 295's. Personally, I would go with the wider tire-the 305; it looks better, and would stay with a 70 series because if you move to a 75, your speedo will be off. I know because I have 265/75/16 (came with 255/70/16) on mine and it is off about 5mph (70 on speedo=75mph). Anyway, the first #is width of tire, 2nd is an aspect ratio (basically how tall the sidewall is-lower # narrower sidewall, larger #, wider sidewall), and 3rd # is rim diameter. You can change the first# w/out affecting speedo, as long as you have room to go as wide as you want too (you should have room for the 295), 2nd # will affect speedo, and third # can only be changed if you get new rims.

"You can change the first# w/out affecting speedo."

no no no no no

Pat- Please dont take this the wrong way, but ... no.

The aspect ratio (the second number) is a percentage of the tire's width (the first number). If you increase the width, then you will need to DECREASE the aspect ratio in order to keep the same overall diameter, otherwise the diameter will also increase.

As an example:

A 265/75-16 tire has a width of 265mm, and a sidewall height of 198.75mm (75% of 265). The tire's overall diameter is 16" + 7.82" (198.75mm) + 7.82" = 31.64"

A 285/75-16 tire has a width of 285mm, and a sidewall height of 213.75mm (75% of 285). This tire's overall diameter is 16" + 8.42" (213.75mm) + 8.42" = 32.84"

For the wheel selection, there is some 17x8 and 17x10 wheels out there now. This will definately help the tire manufacturers to make wider tires in the 17" rim size. It has just been slow......

I was going to go with the 16.5 wheels, but it is very limited. more limited than the 17" now, so I decided to stay with the 16s and 285 tires. Should have everything installed tommorrow.

follow riotrob's advice; width, aspect ratio, or a combination of the two change overall height. There has been many posts of incorrect advice about this.

How many teeth are on your speedo gear?

Thanks,

Both myself and Iridektm have the 3.55 gears and stock 235 tires. We also both went with 285s. The tranny is a manual, so the stock gear was a red 21 tooth.

We both installed a 19 tooth gear. His was pink, mine was tan. I believe the one I got was for an auto tranny, but it works fine.

Red face

Riotrob,
I never looked at it that way, but I DO see where you're coming from. Thanks for the info. Any idea how much the speedo is off on my friends 2000 4x4- original tires=255/70/16. Replaced them with 305/70/16.

Matt90GT,
Good idea to stay w/the 16". Better tire selection and cheaper (for the most part) than the 16.5 & 17".

The 255 tires are 30.2" tall. The 305s are about 32.8" tall.

If you run a calculator for the tire size and gears, you will be about 6mph off. So you will need one less or better yet, 2 less teeth on the speedo gear. Better to run a few MPH fast than slow.
