Question How big & wide can I go w/out a lift?

I am looking to purchase some new tires for my '99 4x4 within the next week or so. I was wondering if 305/70 R16 would fit without rubbing. I'll probally go with the BFG All Terrains. Also, they should fit on my stock 16" rims correct? They originally came with 245/75 R16s. This will be the first of manys mods to come. Thanks for the help.

305/70/16 Will NOT fit stock rims.
285/75/16 will fit the truck but might not fit the rim
BFG recommends a 7.5" for the 285s, but they might fit the stock 7" rim.
265/75/16 will fit as will the 275/70/16.

I have 305' as you can see from my signature and my truck is not lifted. You can also see my rim size. I have no problems ever rubbing and the truck looks lifted and mean. The ORP may have an affect on the rubbing verses a reg. 4x4. I can send pics if you want to see them just reach me at randyt@cinci.rr.com

Thanks for the replies. I'm gonna look into gettin some new rims soon to fit the 305's. I didnt know the factory rime were so small. I thought that would be 8, not 7. Oh well, I guess I better start sayin my money.

Another thing, I went to BFG's website and you're right, they dont make 305's. I'll have to look into the Goodyears. Thanks

do you off-road or own an asphalt 4x4, like myself? this is a big factor on tires. 305's are too wide to fit factory wheels. but, i don't think bfg makes that size either>?? if that size is a must goodyear and pro-comp make em. get an 8 inch wheel...at least.

Take the first number (section width, not tread width) and divide it by 25.4 to convert mm to in. Then take that number you just got, multiply it times the 2nd number(divided by 100), times 2, plus the 3rd number (rim diameter) to get tire diameter.

Just so you know why the above numbers (way above) won't fit

305/70R16 = 32.8 x 12.0
285/75R16 = 32.8 x 11.2
265/75R16 = 31.7 x 10.4

That 265/75R16 is a very good tire for stock rims on a stock 4x4 and even maybe a 2WD. I have 32x11.50 on a 16x7 STOCK rim w/NO torsion bar tightening and they fit nicely, even w/heavy off-roading. The guys at Discount Tire said it was a very nice fit. And I know the tire won't come off the bead...

Cool

I'm running Goodyear ATS 305/70X16's and so far I love them. No rubbing at all and they improved the overall handling in most conditions. I say most only because I haven't had them on wet asphalt yet. Not much rain in the Southern California Desert! My turning radius seemed to improve as well. I have to park in a tight parking lot where I work so this is a plus. But the biggest plus is the way they improved the looks of my truck!

Since BFG does not make the 305 size tires presently, look into the 295 tires. They are .3 inches taller than the 285s and 10mm wider.

Check out these websites for some good wheel pics to get an idea of what you might like on your truck. They both have a great selection of wheels and pics to look at. Good luck!

My question is what is the biggest tire you can put on without having to cough up for a new set of rims?
