I thought separating belts was a problem when radials first came out. Certainly you won't get a separated belt on every tire the first time you crisscross it. If that were the case then I would have a driveway full of tires with separated belts.
I can't remember the last time I heard someone complain about a separated belt in their tire.

There was an article in Hot Rod Magazine about common auto myths and the separated belt issue was one of the topics.
They stated that they had checked with the major manufacturers and that they all said to "Rotate freely" unless you have specific directional tires or miss-matched sizes front and rear.
