Question How Big? Tires?

Without lifting...how big of Tires can realistically get under a 01 supercrew 4X4??

305/70/16 ?

315/70/16 ?

33X12X16 ?

should rim size be changed?

Also....where can i look to for Rims that are decent...but not mega spendy? I guess the bolt pattern is a little more specialized??

thanks

dave

Well, you will probably have to crank the torsion bars, but I would say go with the 33s. The 315s might be too big.

I had a 4in on my last truck, with 315/75r16s. So, i was never able to see how big I could go without a lift.

Dave,

Did you ever get the 33s? I was wondering as well if they would work with out a lift on 16" tires.

Thanks,
Charlie

hey odenspike

hey

no not yet

i've been working on other thingshere andthere.

just got a decent 3 ton jack and 2 stands a SEARS for only $60...not bad..considering the markup normal price is $150 duh

so i have had other projects..

i made a deal with my wife to use these BIG- O--bigfoot ATs untill summer then get new tires..AFTER a LIFT...hehehe

it seems like i hear different people say different things as for size and lift...some say you dont need a lift for 33" some say you do.

so..until summer...i won't know from experience. but then...oh yeah!

315/70R16 is fine without a lift. Soem people have done 315/70R17 which is an inch larger in diameter.

315/70/16 is about a 34" tire. A 315/75/16 is a 35. 315s are too wide of a tire to fit on a stock wheel. People on here are doing it, but doesn't really mean its a good idea. You'll have a very good chance of premature wear and you'll be putting way more stress on the bead area than was ever intended. Minimum wheel width for 315s is going to be 8". Stock is 7" which is close but not close enough. With 8" wheels and no lift you'll end up rubbing most likely. With 10" wheels and a 3" lift and 315/75/16s I was still rubbing. 305/70/16 would be about the max you'll fit stock with minimum rubbing when you actually follow the wheel width reccommendations. Biggest you can go on stock wheels is 285/75/16s. You can go wider but not without changing wheels. Just remember if you cut corners it may come back to bite you. If you do something do it right the 1st time and save yourself aggrivation later.

315/70R16 is 33.36" in diameter by the numbers, but probably closer to 33" even in production. 315/75R16 is 34.6".

I think powerstroke is a little off in his assement. If people can run 315/70R17 on thie stock FX4's rims and suspension, then people can run safely run 315/70R16. Now, 315/75R16 would be similar diameter to 315/70R17 which may be pushing the boundries of safety even if they "fit". I would not say 285/75R16 is the max one should us ing a stock rim. I would also say 305/70R16 is not the max as 315/70R16 is only half an inch larger.

Dave if you want to do that math:
(section width*profile in percentage*2)/25.4 + rim diameter = total wheel diameter in inches

ex: 315/70R16

(315*0.70*2)/25.4 + 16 = 220.5*2/25.4 + 16 = 441/25.4 + 16 = 17.36 + 16 = 33.36"
