Post Studs change for 2000 model year?

I'm confused (but that's not unusual for me) and I get unclear answers, or no answers, from local dealers and auto wreckers. Here are my questions:

1. When did they change the wheel studs? What was the cut-off date, or did it vary depending on which plant built the truck?

2. My current truck has a September 2000 build date and was built in Ontario, so does that mean it has the newer studs?

3. Did they change the XLT regular alloy wheels? My 2000 wheels don't appear to be any different than earler-model wheels, but are the stud holes the same size?

4. Do later wheels fit earlier trucks (and vica versa), even if the studs are bigger? I want to buy an extra set of ordinary steel wheels (used) off an earlier truck (although post '97), but will these fit my 2000-model truck?

5. What was the change on stud torquing? I heard it was increased. I have no idea what the garage that installed my winter tires torqued my wheels too, and I want to check that.

Any clear information would be greatly appreciated. I don't want to buy used rims and find they don't fit. (Long post. Sorry.)

My third F-series (ordered new, personally). The other two: '73 F-100 Custom, 240 cube 6, 3 on the tree, tan, "West Coast" mirrors, step bumper, knitted vinyl seat, AM radio; and '98 F-150 XL-SC, XLS package, Pacific Green, 4.2 5-speed, 3.55 ls, FM-cassette.

GREAT trucks!

Red face

Shifter, the wheel studs chenged in mid-'99 from 12-mm to the 14-mm size. The later 14-mm rims can be used on the earlier trucks (atleast I did on my early '99 F150 2wd). The early wheels will not fit the newer trucks unless you enlarge the holes. Our trucks use the hub-centric mounting, so the larger holes were no problem as long as you kept the lugs torqued properly, as I noticed no shift what so ever on my '99. I hope this helps, if anyone has better info, please post. Thanks, Doc

Pretty much exactly what doc_f150 said.

Although, it was an early-'00 change instead of a mid-'99 change. My dad's '00 model truck was built 10/99 and has the 12mm studs. My [former] '00 F150 was built 12/99 and had the 14mm studs.

I'm running the rims (14mm hole) from the '00 F150 on the '97 Expedition (12mm studs) right now! No problems even when off-roading.

nomo: I'm probably going to want to go the other way: early steel rims for my snows on my '00 to save the aluminum rims(next year). So, do you all think I can do that? With my September 99 build date (Y2K model year).

And, if so, what do I torque my current bolts to?

Thumbs up

Shifter: have read on Lightning board that 12mm holes can be drilled out to 14mm. Y2K lugnuts have large flatwashers attached to them (thread size=14mmx2mm) and are torqued on alloy rims (not sure about steel rims) to 150 ft/lbs.

So, are you sure that you have the 14mm studs? As I posted before, my dad's Y2K model was built in October '99 and it still has the 12mm studs.

Regardless, check before you do any mods to the rims. They might just fit without drilling.
