Waldo,
The Diameter of 275/70 17, is 32.15748 inches. I dont know how to figure out the tread width. I have 255/70 16 on my truck, the tread width is over 8 1/4".

Damn, that means that I have 32 inchers on a 4x2. How did you figure that?

Waldo0506,
Do you possibly mean 275/60R17? This is the size that are installed on STX/Sport 4x2 models on the 17" rims. If you are, the diameter is right at 30" (roughly same as 255/70R16). The tread width is 8.66", I believe. The formula for figuring tread width is as follows: 275 (first number)/25.4 x (100 - 60 [second number])/100 x 2. This equals 8.66". The tread width for a 255/70R16 is 6.02". I'm not sure if they make a 275/70R17, but if they do, the diameter would be around 32". If you have a 4x2, I'm almost sure you have the 275/60R17.
The numeric measurements on most passenger tires mean the following: the first number is expressed in millimeters and is the measurement from the center of the tread to the inside edge of the sidewall; the second number is the percentage of that length that is the sidewall (a 60 series tire has 60% of the rubber on the sidewall and 40% on the tread); and, of course, the last number is the wheel diameter. The higher the second number, the 'taller' the tire and narrower the tread width.
I know I'm not using the proper terminology for these measurements, but I hope that this helps a little. By the way, my dream setup for my truck is 18" Lightning wheels (painted to match the truck) with 285/55R18 Yokohama's. Doing the math, I still keep the basic 30" diameter (30.3"). The 255/70R16 original tires on my truck had a diameter of 30.1". I think these 18" tires I described have a tread width of 10.2". They'd look pretty beefy. I'll quit rambling and wishful thinking now. Happy calculating and Happy New Year! If you have any other tire calculating questions, feel free to give me a shout. Later!

Waldo0506,
For your tire, the diameter is 31.6" and the tread width is 6.3". I didn't notice before where you were from; I think you and me might be the only members (that I've seen so far) from west TN. I'm about 80 miles from Memphis, about 10 miles north of Jackson. We need to recruit more from our area.
Your truck probably came with a 30" tire diameter; did you know that, with your tires, you've essentially put a higher gear ratio on your truck with the 31.6" tires. Did you notice any loss in power/torque? You probably gained mileage, I'd imagine. Your speedometer/odometer is off by 5% or so, unless you've corrected it with a different speedo gear or chip/programmer. I know you didn't ask anything about that; it was all free. Shoot me an e-mail sometime at eric-karen@onemain.com if you want to talk trucks with a fellow Tennessean. Later!

Collierville TN, are you near clarksville?

Yea we need more from our area. There are alot of f150 owners around memphis but I get the dumbest look when I mention a web site. I didnt even know that there was someone on here from tennessee at all. For college I might go to austin peay. it sounds like it is up by you. maybe we can then do what the texas boys do and cruise around and stuff.

"What you know about them TEXAS boys
coming down in candy toys"

You guys seem to know lot about tires

But out here its most about looks every one whats big wheels not tires. every one is rolling on 18 true 22 out here. The look of the rims is more important than the tire.

I still have stock rims but I am about to purchase some rims. I dont know what to go with yet I reall want some 20's but the cost is what gots me waiting. I know a guy who is selling some 18 kmc Tarantulas but I dont know what kind of tires to get I roll in a 97 F150 sc. auto, 4.6 V8 flare side.

but why dont you guys come cruise down here some time.
