Cool 285's on a 4x2, no problem!

OK, I know some of you have been doubting me and waiting for the pics to prove it. Well, due to a mix up on the digital camera, I finaly have the pics!

First, some info. I got the BFG All-terrain KO's in 285/75r16 at Discount Tire. They checked to see if it would fit first and we found a slight problem. There is a wire loom that runs on the drivers side frame rail that I had to relocate a bit higher. You kinda have to see the picture on this one. Other than that, there has been no rubbing whatsoever. I tried to make it rub but I haven't been sucessful so far. I took it off road last weekend and didn't have any problems there either. Well, except for getting stuck as *****. But hey, it's fun.

There have been no problems since getting the tires, I've had them for about 500 miles now. No steering problems, no ABS prolems, no power problems. I didn't change gears but I think mine are low enough for these tires. I've got the 3.55 gears. The only thing is I wish the speedometer was correct. But I"ve been too lazy to go to the dealership to have them fix it.

So, here are the pics:

here is the reroute of that loom of wires I was talking about. The old location of the loom was that scratch on the frame rail you see in the lower left area of the pic. The new location is behind the wheel well plastic and behind the body mount.

So I hope I have shed some light into the biggest tires possible on a 4x2. Although, you might even be able to fit 295/75r16's on there, But that would be pushing it even more than I did, and that's a lot.

Cool

I think 295's are pushing it too much. And I wouldn't see why anybody would want to put those on a stock 4x2. Sticking too much tire in a wheel well doesn't look very good.

IMO, on a stock 4x2, 265's are plenty good.

First, 54regcab, no lift, they fit.
Next, Mudder, I guess it's just personal preference, I think having tires too small for the wheel well looks like crap, I like to see the wells filled. And about the rally, I've got classes and homework to do. I don't think I'll be able to find time to go. Thanks though.

Hey Roland, where in Austin do you go off-roading?? If you want to do some heavy off-roading, I know a place. I've been there once, and I got really stuck, but mine's 2WD also. If you know where the Austin Diagnostic Clinic is, there's a place right off the road from there that is for some serious off-roaders. Two of my buddys and I went over there. One has a lifted Jeep Grand Cherokee, and another has a lifted Z71. They both got stuck, and they hardly ever do. I am going to Discount Tire today to see about the 285. Wne to NTB and they said I couldn't do it unless it was lifted.

No, behind the ADC off ben white. Another place that you could go is behind the Sunny Bowl on the way to Georgetown aka "the swamp". A buddy of mine with a Bronco went there and got stuck, water was up to his windows, and he has a 3" body lift. They had to tow him out, it's pretty hardcore stuff. Yeah, that would be cool if we could hook up some time.

r0land,

I too am thinking of buying a set of BF Goodrich All-Terrain T/A KO's for my truck, although I have a SuperCab and 4x4.

I'm thinking of buying the exact same tire that you bought... the LT285/75R16's and mounting them on my stock Ford aluminum rims.

I've got a few questions for you...

1. How much did you pay for each tire?

2. Are they noisy on the highway? I want a relatively quiet tire.

3. How's the dry/wet traction? Better than the stock Goodyear Wrangler RT/S?

4. How's the ride? Did the tires balance well? Any vibration/shimmying at highway speeds?

I'm even considering jumping up to the LT295's for my baby, but that might be pushing things a bit.

Thanks!!

Wink

bluecrab,

1) I got the tires from Discount tire, they were $156 per tire, that is the price that BFG imposes. I got the lifetime everything warrenty from Discount which made teh price soar to $830.

2)They aren't noisy at all on the highway. They are going to be noticeably noisier than the RTS's. I think they are noisier when slowing down to a stop than on the highway. I really have to listen to hear them above the wind noise, and that's with the radio off.

3) The reason I decided to get new tires, is because the wet traction on my AP's sucked @ss! These are WAY better! Of course, if I try to, they will spin. But I think the best word for them is predictable. As for dry traction, nothing is better. But almost any tire is good on dry traction. Mud traction, if you are interested, isn't great. If you get into deep, more than 4", of packed mud, the tires are gonna pack full. But, they unpack pretty good. After all, they are an all-terrain, not a mud tire.

4) The rid is a bit more bumpy. But you have to expect that going from a P-metric to an lt tire. The side wall is much stiffer so the tires take less of the suspension duties. Ballancing is perfect. I've heard of people having problems with these tires in this size, but I don't have a clue what they are talking about. I've taken my truck to about 85mph and haven't felt any problems. I'd say they are even more stable than my old AP's. But they are wider, 285 vs. 255.

I like the look of stuffed wheel wells. I think that if you can, go with the 295's. They only thing there is that you might want to consider jumping to 8" wide rims. I know of one member that didn't and hasn't had any problems. So, that's kind of up to you. I don't think you are going to have any problems with rubbing, especially in a 4x4.

Sorry for the long post but I wanted to cover all of your questions in detail. Be sure to post some pics when you get the new tires!
