Question tire selection input

I'm looking to put larger tires on my stock 16" rims, i've been looking and found a couple of sizes I like but I am not sure if they will fit. They are: 285/75-16, or 275/70-16, has anyone used these sizes or something similar? Any input would be great.

Both are probably too wide for your stock rims. Go to the website of the manufacturer in whose tires you are interested and look up the dimensions on the tires, they will include a range of rim widths recommended for each size.

Thanks ccla,
I'm not crazy about BfGoodrich tires, I like the goodyears but they don't seem to have that tire for my truck, I think i'm going to try Generals, I had them on my 79 bronco and loved them.

Gino,
absolutely you can put that size(s) tires on you stock 16" wheels. I have 265/75/16 on stock 16" and they look just like an ORP with the 17"wheels and 255's. but I have seen many truck running the 285's and they look great. Stock 16" wheels are 7" wide so they are plenty wide enough for that size tire. Let me know what you end up with.

DANFORDMAN.
Thanks, I'm leaning towards the 285's, just waiting for Ford to "straighten out" my wheel alignment problem. I'll keep you posted.

Is there any problem with the computer prom chip once you change tire size? Obviously, the speedo is off. Does the prom chip need info from the tach and speedo combined, as they will differ now.

The biggest tire that I am certain will fit stock rims is the 305/70/16. My friend has a set on his 97 4x4 sc lb. Everything else on his truck is stock.
I have mine mounted on 16x8 rims and my tires look wider.

I am currently running 285/75R16 BFG All-Terrains on my stock wheels, and they look great. I had to put a lift on my 2wd to make them fit (Fabtech 3 1/2") but they don't scrub and only a tad more tire whine than stock.
