Good question. I have 29,000 and have 5/32 tread left. I have the Goodyear Wrangler AP 255/70/16s. They started with 12/32 tread. A salesman at Discount Tire told me 3/32 should be as low as you go. Obviously if you see the tread wear bars across the tires you are in deep trouble.
I have started saving my pennies to buy new tires in a few months. They will not be the same as stock. These Goodyears hydroplane on almost any wet surface including just driving out of a car wash.

I just replaced my stock P255/70/16 goodyear
Wrangler RT/S tires 3 weeks ago at 54,000 miles and they still had a decent amount of tread on them but they were never that great of a tire in my opinion to begin with and traction was terrible wet or dry. i replaced with LT265/75/16 Bridgestone Dueller a/t and
like the look of them a lot. and the traction
is really a vast improvement, even compared to when the truck was new.

Had the same stock Goodyear Wrangler AP 255/70R-16's. Replaced them with Bridgestone ATP 265/75R-16's at 29K. Some tread left but too much slipping on wet roads at that point. They did very well on dry highways though. Much better traction with the Bridgestone ATP's

I have 20,000 on my tires now, and they got to go (not due to the tread being gone), but they are 235/70/16 generals (see why).

kcclan and/or cphilip
did either of you recal the speedometer, and if you didn't how is the truck shifting. (does it shift sooner lower rpm or does it shift later higer rpm)

No, I just recalibrated my brain. I have a lot of unused areas for this and it cost less. I used the calcualtor someone gave us on an earlier thread here (thanks whomever you were) to determine a (if I remember correctly) 4% difference. I just try to drive 4-5 mph less at uper highway speeds and right on at lower that say 45. I don't push the extra 5 mph like I used to. I don't think the 97 can be recalibrated easily (by computer)like the later models. I think it takes a gear or recalibration module add on. I am right on this assumption guys/gals?

You may just have to replace the tranny gear.
It only takes a few minutes on most cars.
Never done it on an F150.
You just need a gear with 4% less teeth.

I have the original Goodyear Wrangler 17 inch RT/S tires on my '97. 35,500 miles. I rotate and watch air pressure. They look like they have lots of life left. Of course I don't burn much rubber! Wish I could squeal instead of chirp!

Original Firestones, 235-70 X 16s. They're done - down to little more than the minimum legal depth and certainly no good for a third winter - at 36,000 km - about 23,000 miles.

I also had two flats with them - my first flats in more than 30 years of driving. Not impressed.

1998 XL SC short-box 4.2 5-speed 3.55LS, Pacific Green, A/C, factory box liner, factory dark tinted rear glass (like the XLT), cassette, carpet, Canadian XLS package (split bench, chrome wheels, side mouldings, box light, tailgate lock), sill guards, Windstar (driver's) wiper blade (the one with the air scoop). Oh ya: snazzy Tweetie Bird floor mats.

New 2000 F-150 on order, same as the current one except black and XLT. Great trucks!

I had the Firestone 235/70/16s on my 98, I traded it in with 21,000 miles and no tread left at all. They were pretty bad tires. Godd Years on my 99 wearing better for now but they aren't much better otherwise. I will upgrade to Generals in a year or two.

Give me a couple of months and I'll let you know how these new BFG tires wear, thats what came on mt 2000 Lariat.
I forgot what style they are, but they have a really deep tread.
First time I looked at them I thought they might be for a 4 wheel drive....Time will tell

I have the Firestone tires, also. However, I have 25k miles on these and they still have approx. 7/32 left to wear. I drive 60 miles a day at mostly 50-60 m.p.h. I have never been a F'stone fan but these are "o.k."

By the way, A local tire dealer here in Nashville sold me a set of the Wilderness HT's, P235/70/16, for $47 each - very reasonable I thought - at a clearance sale they had last fall. So I have a set waiting to go on when the OE's wear out.

Just my .02

Dogcam: I like the look of those BFGoodrich tires you're talking about. I saw them at a dealer. I think they're called Radial TA Long Trails. They are also asymetric (different on the inside and outside edges). They also have a higher tread wear number than the Firestones stamped on the sidewall (they're a 440, I seem to recall).

When my new 2000 comes in, I will check to see if it's on Firestones, like my current one. If it is, I think I will insist on a tire/wheel swap to get the BFGs before I take delivery.

New 2000 F-150 on order Sept. 2 - sure hope they don't go on strike up here in Canada! Same mechanically as the current one except black, XLT, CD and side steps. Great trucks!
