Question Chrome or Polished Aluminum

I am looking for some new rims for my new supercrew due at the end of the month, and all the stores are pushing chrome over polished aluminum. Anyone have any preferances?

Definitely get the chrome, they cost more but look better. The polished aluminum rims are harder to clean; seems road grime sticks more and is harder to clean. Also they scratch easily. I have American Racing polished Atlas rims. The finish isn't as smooth as chrome, and I have to use a very soft cloth to clean them. Back track some earlier posts; alot prefer the chrome ones.

I have clearcoated aluminum on one of my cars. The first wheel weight change and first tire change chipped/scratched the clearcoat in all touched places.

Max: You need better tire techs changing your tires. I have my bothers shop do my tires and he always has his best guy do the mount/dismount and balance. After 5 years and three sets of tires, there were no scratches at all on the lips of my cc/aluminum American Racing Wheels.

I'd pick Chrome or Clearcoated before polished.

2000 F-150 4x4- You're right, I need better techs everywhere I go. The factory and aftermarket wheel weights made the most damage. The techs were knowledgeable and I always watch them. After mounting a few thousand tires when I was young, I decided to get steel wheels on this truck. My clearcoated aluminum wheels are on the wife's Supra, and the factory weights even chipped the clearcoat.

Thanks for the input. The truck has finally arrived and it badly needs bigger and better tires and wheels. I think I will go for the chrome.

Thumbs down

I hate chrome wheels. IMO its too '1980s'. All show, no go.

I prefer a muscular, yet conservative look. More of a 'sleeper', less of a 'poseur'.

Too 80's? I guess I think of Miami Vice, Airwolf, the A-team, or Schoolhouse Rock more than chrome wheels.

michael_hovis-

EXACTLY! EXACTLY! EXACTLY!

Miami Vise - leasure suits, no socks, a FAKE daytona spyder (it was a kit-car, built on a corvette chassis, with exhaust sounds dubbed in), big chrome gas-blowback .45s.

Airwolf - A regular Bell hellicopter with a lot of FAKE body panels and a FAKED afterburner (probably propane).

A-team - A blacked-out Chevy van driven by a man with more metal around his head, neck and fingers than was used to make the van they were driving. They all had dressed-up Ruger mini-14s that were capable of firing at machine-gun rates - but could never hit anything. And at the last minute, they always found (in an old barn) a welder, bulldozer, and enough nuts and bolts to convert the Schoolhouse Rock's bus into a fire spitting, potatoe launching tank, that at best could only diasble a few station-wagons.

Disco baby!

Unless you want to be out there cleaning and polishing every day, DO NOT get polished aluminum!!! I have them, but, I will never have them again!

I'm thinking that chrome rims and nerf bars would look good and be LOW maintenance.

Cool

Even chrome rims are much more maintenance than the argent silver or powdercoated rims. Especially if it is chrome plated over steel instead of aluminum. They will definitly rust if not maintenanced regularly. If you get good billet T606 aluminum wheels they arent too bad but definitly stay away from clearcoated, cast aluminum wheels.

I was bummed over not being able to get aluminum on Nick -- but after reading this, I feel better.
