Cool Got my Goodyear MT/R's

I got my new wheels and tires on today. I went with a set of 285/75-16 Goodyear MT/R's mounted on 16X8 Center Line Hell Cats.

The first thing I need to tell you, for anyone considering buying these (Center Line) wheels is DON'T! *I* could have cast a better wheel! And believe me, I know nothing about casting. On the shiny side they look O.K. other than they did a hack job on the polishing. On the inside is another story. The castings are full of porosity. Also on the rim portion of the wheels the castings were thin enough in spots that there were places that were left un-machined. Not that I think it will hurt anything, it just looks nasty. But the extreme amount of porosity has me a little worried. That will definately make the wheels structurally weaker. These are fairly high dollar wheels. I was expecting *much* more. I started to order some Mickey Thompson Classic II's but they were back ordered at least into December. I should have waited. For $50 less each, I think I would have gotten a better wheel.

On the up side, I think I like the tires. They're a little noisy, but they drive well, look great, and I'm not nearly as worried about getting stuck as I was with the RT/S's. I think they're just the right size for a 4x4 F150 with no lift. They look proportional and still have plenty of clearance.

Let me know what you think.

Sorry folks, I decided to delete the pics until I figure out how to make them the right size. I know some people get a little bent if they're too big. But here's a link to my sight. members.aol.com/ninetyeightfword/truck.html

I just ordered the exact same setup for my 2001 F150 4X4 ORP - just out of curiousity did you need to crank up your torsion bars to make your set up fit??

I would take the rims back and have them replaced with ones that satisfy you! As much money as you paid, you need to make sure your satisfied. When I purchased my new rims, the shop scratched them up pretty bad, needless to say, the shop bought four new rims and I took them and had them mounted at another shop!

pra4snow,

If you have ordered Center Line wheels, do yourself a favor and cancel the order or send them back. All those dark spots you see on the back side of the hub and spokes are porosity holes. Pictures don't do it justice. They don't look as bad in the pictures as they do in person, and they look pretty bad in the pictures.

I had previously cranked the bars up 2.5 turns to compensate for the extra weight on the front end. It's still pretty much the stock height. I thought I might have to turn them up some more with the new tires, but there's still plenty of clearance.

Nitrox,

Yeah, I bought the wheels from National Tire & Wheel (mail order). I bought the tires from National Tire & Battery (locally) and had them mounted there. I plan on calling NT&W after Thanksgiving and letting them know how disappionted I am with the quality of the wheels. I don't expect much from them though, considering the tires are already on the wheels and they're on the truck. I may just have to live with them (or die with them). But, you can be sure I'll show and tell everyone I can to keep them from landing in the same boat.

hunter,
i can answer the 265 question for you...they don't make it, yet, is what i was told....the 285's look great on the f-150's...i considered a 235/85...same height as a 265, but the tread is much smaller than the 285's..good luck, Rich...
98fword,
your truck looks great...how do you like the mt/r's off-road, they look like they should go pretty well....thanks, Rich..

Hunter4X4,

I paid $791.28 for four of them mounted, balanced, stems, out the door at National Tire & Battery. That's the cheapest I could find them locally.

I had Goodyear RT/S's on before these and the MT/R's are noticeably noisier. For me though, not noisy enough to wipe the smile off my face that is generated by having them on there.

hikerrich,

I haven't had the chance to do any serious off roading. The little bit of time they have spent off road, they've done well.

One problem I didn't anticipate was the need to pave my driveway. See, it's not going to be too much longer and all the gravel from the driveway is going to be out there on the road! These tires can pick up some pretty big chunks of rock! And of course, they don't come out until your out on the road.

Cool

98fword,

You have a very nice truck. That hidden winch looks really good on there. I wish mine stuck out more like that, cause it's hard to see. Those tires also look really good on there. I am a fan of BFG, but those are getting me to thinkin of trying those out for my next set. Since your truck is basically just like mine I know how they are gonna look, and I like it a lot. Again, nice truck, very clean.

Why, thank you, Mudder! I'm flattered! That's a wonderful compliment. Especially coming from a guy that has too many trophies to fit in the bed of his truck!

I had given serious consideration to the BFG's. But, after seeing these and doing a little research, I knew they were going on my truck. They've received some pretty high marks in the reviews I've seen. The rock crawlers that have tried them like them also. They have a new silica compound that's supposed to make them more puncture resistant. Which is good, considering the replacement cost!

I thought when I bought my winch that the Warn and Ramsey mounts were essentially the same. But, now that you mentioned it, I can see that they are different. Warn discribes their mount as semi-hidden. And I see in your signature that yours is listed as "hidden". I guess that's the difference.

Thanks again! BTW, I like your truck too! (I can just hear the other members filling barf bags now)

I just hope if our paths ever cross, I don't make the mistake of not turning my high beams down in time!

Red face

98fword, This has really got me worried, I wanted to get a set of centerlines and have had them before. Have you contacted them yet? If so, What did they say? Are they going to replace them? They should. You might want to get in touch with centerline directly. check them out at www.centerlinewheels.com and they might take care of this directly. They come with a warrenty against CRAFTSMANSHIP right? When you find something out please let us know.

F150Degrees,

I have not had the chance to contact Center Line yet. I have talked with someone at National Tire & Wheel. I figured I would start with the place of purchase. I explained to him how disappointed I was with the quality of these wheels, about the porosity and the terrible polishing. He made it clear he was not concerned. His words were something to the effect that these weren't the most high dollar wheels on the market. That they were sort of middle of the road and that's pretty much the kind of thing I could expect for that price. Needless to say that was NOT the answer I was looking for! >

Thank you for the link to Center Line. I'll be contacting them next. I really don't expect to gain anything there either. But, you never know.

I'll keep everyone here posted on the outcome. I'll also be updating my web page with the responses and actions or lack there of, of the two companies I dealt with (National Tire & Wheel and Center Line). And of course I will include a link to my web page every time I post my signature.

I would love to come on here and post something good about Center Line. And will if they decide to do the right thing. I think it would be in their best interest. I feel with the number of members here (potential customers) and their friends, doing what is right could benefit them. If not, I believe it will put at least a very small dent in their wallets. I know this experience has lost at least one sale for National Tire & Wheel. I had planned on buying some new shocks from them before I called and got the brush off. All he would have had to do was offer help with talking to Center Line or something. But he blew me off. That will utimately cost him money. I will freely discuss this with everyone I can at every opportunity.

Isn't this board a wonderful thing?!

98fword,
That guys is full of crap. You paid for a product that is of good quality, no matter what price you paid. You bought the wheels new they should be almost perfect, I can see little defects but not like the ones you have pictures of. I would send those pictures to Center line wheels and let them explain.....I paid about 100 a piece for my low range wheels, no defects noticeable..I had a friend that had certerlines on his 94 ford and 2 of the 4 developed cracks in the rim itself, all he knew is he had a slow leak...I saw the crack and wondered how air stayed in at all....Here are my cheap rims...EAGLE 143, 16X10s..Dave

hikerrich,

They may very well be making them in 265's. I think it would be smart of them to do so.
Do you think he could possibly have them confused with the M/T's or maybe the XT/R's?

BTW: We're supposed to be getting about a foot of snow tonite and tomorrow......PLAY TIME!!!!!!
