advice for new wheels and tires?
I have an '03 F150 4X4, 4.6, 5spd, 3.55 LS. I am thinking about getting some new wheels and tires for better looks. My current tires are RT/S 255/70 16. With the XL-style steel rims, they are BORING...
I would like to go to a slightly larger tire, just enough to look better, but not so much to really affect my overall gearing. I also would like some nice aluminum rims, nothing too fancy, but very good quality (name with good reputation) is important.
I'm considering 265/70-17 mounted on 17x8 rims. Will this effect gearing too much? Even with 3.55, it's already about as tall as I want it.
Any advice on brands, size, and where to get them would be appreciated. Thanks.
Oh, and what about the spare? I would guess I need to replace that as well - will the standard spare carrier hold the larger tire?

I would not run a wheel wider than 8", Some of these new alloy wheels are chrome plated, saving you lots of elbow grease polishing them. My F250LD had 245 70 16 wheels and I now have 265 75 16 and really like them. They ride nice, spare fits nice, and speed does not seem to be noticeably off. The problem with 17s is your tire sizes are limited and they do cost a little more sometimes. most tire stores will swap you one of their good used tires for your new or like new factory spare, either paying no extra, or just for mount and balance. You can of course get 265 70 or 75s in the 16" also. Let us know what you do! Just shop around for a good deal!

I have an 04/F150XLT, and I just went to a 265x70x17 Michelin LTX MS. (10.8" Width; 31.8" Diam.) .. It's a great tire, beefy, solid, great look for my vehicle (without an oversize look). I rarely ride off road now, so this tire gives me what I need in a more all season tire, and fills out the wheel wells.
My stock tire was 235x70x17.... and my new tires throws my speedo off about 5% (they have 1.6" greater diameter)..... so if your going up to a 17 your speedo will be off some.
The 04's rim is 17x7.5.... 6 lug pattern.

Wasn't the stock tire size on the off road packages 265/70/17? It has been a long time since I had on my stock tires, but I believe that is what size mine were.
All in all, you will have no problem turning those with 3.55LS. Man, I know people with 37s on their truck and still have the 3.55s!
I have 35s with 3.73LS an it performs exceptionally well. So 265/70s which are about a 32" diameter will be fine for 3.55 gearing.
