Largest tires for Expedition

Hey, so whats the biggest, widest tire i can get on my unlifted 99 Expedition XLT? I don't mind trimming the fender a bit. Heard you can get a 33" on there but what's the widest i can get in a 33"? Also in metric whats the biggest i can get, the mechanic tells me i can get a 285/70 but can i go bigger with the right backspacing on the rim? Also whats the concensus on expedition body lifts, can you see the frame and stuff? Whats the biggest tire i can get if i get a 3" body lift?

Any advice is good, I want to make my expedition bad as hell without spending a boatload on a suspension lift.

I beleive the fender clearance is the same on Expy's as F-150's. If it is you can fit a 305/70-16 (33x12.50) on a 16x8 or 16x10 inch wheel with 4 1/2 inches of backspacing. If you go with a 10 inch wide wheel, you will have to crank up the torsion bars, and/or trim a little plastic off the front bumper's lower valance. You could of course also use a 33x12.50-17 on a 17x8 or 17x10 inch wheel. The 16's just give you a wider selection of wheels and tires.
As for the body lift, I installed one on a friends 4x2 Expy and it looked fine. If you go with a body lift you could go to a 315/75-16 (35x12.50).
