If I were you I would go with a 16x10 rim vice the 16x8. This will give you the look your looking for.

I have 16x8's on mine and wish I would of got the 16x10's. Also with the 16x10's you could put 285/75/16's (33x10.5) and get basically the same look as 16x8's with the 33x12.5, (305/70/16) or go with the 33x12.5 with the 16x10's and get them to stick out allot more. with the 16x8's it wont stick out past your fender with both sizes.

Wandell will probable comment soon as he is the local rep on tires.

sigh..........

How is putting 285s on a 10" rim going to be even REMOTELY close to the same look as a 305 (12.5) on an 8" rim? The 8" wheels and 12.5" tires will make the tires stand more straight up and will not stick out past the wheel wells very much. A 10" wheel with the same width tire will however stick out 1bout 1-2" past the wheel wells. I have run both setups when I had my F150. On a side note I know Wandell has been saying this before about running 285s on 10" wheels but thats not the best setup. Some tire manufacturers don't list a 10" wheel as a recommended size for 285s. If you were to go ahead with that setup and have to try and turn in something for a tread wear warranty they would have the grounds to turn you away. I used to work in a tire store so its not like I'm new to this. Now whether or not you get turned down depends on your tire dealer. I wouldn't go over an 8" wheel for a 285 series tire. The rule of thumb for standard LT tires is keeping the tire 2-4" wider than the wheel size.

Anyhow to answer your original question keep the backspacing as close to stock as you can. If you start changing it you will run into premature bearing, suspension, steering, and brake failure. I went through 3 hub assemblies on my truck at $200 ea. in the time I had larger tires on it. I know of other people who go through 2 or more a year. The wider tires will do this anyways, but the closer you can keep the backspacing to stock the better you are. If you really want to get the tires 1-2" outside the wheel wells then run the 33/12.5/16 (305/70/16) with a 16x10 wheel with standard backspacing. This will give you the most durable setup.

HUHHH???

a. 285/75/16 (33x11) put this tire on a 10" rim (1" smaller in width but 2 " wider in the wheel)

b. 305/70/16 (33x12) put this tire on an 8" rim (1" wider in width but 2" smaller in wheel width)

Looks pretty close to me, although the 10" rim will look a little more wider, and shorter but my point was a 16x10 wheel is more what he is looking for if he wants it to stick out??

Everyone should know that when you put on any tire size larger than whats recommended you run the risk of putting more wear and tear on your trucks parts, but thats the chance you take to get what you want.

A 285 on a 10" wheel will have a ballooned look to it unless the tread and section width are very close. A 305 on an 8" wheel won't have that ballooned look. It will actually look a little sucked in since the tread width and wheel width are more drastic than a 285 with a 10" wheel. If you get a 285 on a 10" wheel that has a wide tread width and a 305 on an 8" wheel with a narrow tread width I guess its possible for them to look similar. But I agree with you in that to get tires to stick out past the fenders in this case 10" wheels with stock backspacing is the ticket.

This is about the best pic I have to see a 10" wheel with stock backspacing. Stock backspacing is 4.625". A good rule of thumb is to run a tire 2-4" wider than your wheel.

hey,
firstly, i have a 00 f-150 2wd and i will level it out (1.5" in the front), but reading this im a little confused...i was planning on a 16x8 rim and maybe a 285/75 tire. i mean can i fit a 305/70 on there w.o any problems? or should it be on a 16x10 rim? i really want the 305/70, but i heard that might cause problems, but would a 16x10 solve that issue?

thx all

AUeagle009, I would run a 305/70 on a 16x10 inch wheel. I don't beleive that you are going to get a 16x8 to "stick out" unless you do something like run wheel spacers, which isn't a good idea. In fact, even with 16x10's, the tires are gonna be more or less even with the edge of the fenders.
Silver00f, you are gonna need more lift to fit a 305/70-16 on a 4x2 with a 16x10. 4x4's sit about 3 inches taller than a 4x2. So you need at least 3 inches of lift to fit 305's on a 16x10.
