Largest tire for a 17x8 wheel

What is the largest tire that can be put on a 17x8 wheel? I was told last night by my local Tire Discounter, the largest tire I could put on them, was a 285/70-17.

I beleive almost all tire manufactures approve their 315/70-17's (35x12.50-17) for use on wheels 8 to 10 inches wide. Check the website of the tire manufacturer you are considering to verify what they recommend.
