12mm vs 14mm

it is my understanding that the 97 thru 99 ford f-150's had the 122m bolts, and the 00's and up have 14mm. Why is that? I also understand that the wheel will still fit on either truck but it is not recommended that you do that. What problems will you have? The reason I am asking is I have a 99' and have had nothing but problems ever since the wheels went on. I can't seem to make it not shutter. Any help would be nice.

I have a 2000 f150 14mm studs. just tried a 97 stock steel rim. did not want to go on. so I measured the center hole and bolt holes. the 97 stud holes are about a 16th smaller than my 2000 stud holes, center hole seems too be the same. I wanted to buy some 98 wheels and had heard about there may be a diffirence.so I called my friend at the parts dept at a ford dealership. he said that stock wheels from 97-99 won't fit 00-03, but couldn't tell me why. so he gave me a 97 wheel and I tried it. it seems their isn't enough play in the 97 stud holes to fit over the center,I think with a little persuation it would. so i'm sticking with 00-03 wheels.

What kind of wheels did you put on, OEM or after market? Wheels for 2000 to 2003 with 5/135 bolt pattern can fit on 1997 - 1999 models using new lug nuts. There will be a little play with the larger holes, but you need to center them & tighten them up. I just put 2003 FX4 wheels on my 99 Expedition using lug nuts from a 1999 Lightning model with no problems. Some after market wheels need a plastic rim to center the wheel.
