Hung up on the 3.55 rear end

I have not gone to any dealers yet to get trade values. I have looked at Edmunds, KBB, and NADA. Edmunds shows the lowest values for my truck at about $23k dealer retail, 19k trade. It has almost every option. Anyway, those dealer asking prices are high., Should get them for a good $3-5k less.
I am still discussing the options with my wife since the Screw is her daily driver.

I have 3.55 at 75 mph I run 2k rpm. My truck downshifts/ unlocks the converter going up hills on the highway. 3.73's will prob allow the truck to stay in 4th, or lockup more which could result in better mpg. I wish I had 3.73's.

One of the Lariats I really like but, it depends on how low the dealer is willing to go. I'm trying to stay with '03 because that was the last year for a good long running design. By then it would seem that all the build kinks etc. were worked out...including the machine gun spark plug issue!!
BGA thanks for the clarification. So with those tires on a 3.55 axle, how are your mpg's? On one of these threads someone mentioned the same set up was returning 12-13 city but 20-22 hwy. Obviously, I'm wondering what the same set up on a 3.73 would do, sounds like little or no difference. Also, what about RPM's, it is my understanding (will test drive this weekend) that the 5.4/3.55 turns about 1900 at 70mph. Is that close to accurate? Thanks for your input guys.

red98f150, I think you hit the nail on the head, check out this reply from a local dealer:
I understand you want to get the best gas mileage as possible, but the reason Ford uses the 3.73 is because the weight of the crew cab truck. With the 3.55, they found that it was not heavy duty enough and the transmission was actually shifting in and out of overdrive, causing more wear and tear on the tranny and dropping the gas mileage.
I think someone else mentioned the same thing, the 3.73 will get you in to OD sooner and keep you there.
Still haven't sold my Fronty, still haven't bought an F150. Most of the trucks I've been looking at are still on the market though, they're not selling. One dealer mentioned that the first flake of snow will firm up the market for 4X4 trucks. I will look back over the 3.73's on my list. Thanks guys.
