and for the record, generally going to a moderately larger tire will IMPROVE ride quality over stock as the taller sidewall gives more cushion. I noticed a huge improvement in my Ranger Edge from stock 30~s to 32s.

That is true for the same load ratied tire. However, most 285/70R17's have a righer load rating which increases sidewall stiffness compared to the stock 265/70 tires.
