Largest Tires I can fit?

I own a 2001 F150 SuperCrew Lariat 4x4...I used to use it for long commute to work so I would always buy normal road tires. However since I dont have to use it for commuting I would like to look at buying some meaner looking off road tires. I currently have the factory 17" rims on it, and dont really have the money to lift it right now. C

Can anyone tell me what is the largest tires I can fit on my truck in diameter and width ?

Most of my off roading occurs at the sand dunes.

I am a total noob what should I be looking for in tires? Is there any brands I should stay away from?

Wandell will probably respond shortly with a whooole lot more info, but I think most would agree that a 32-33" tall tire is the max you'd want on there without a lift.

I know 285/75/16's fit w/o a lift w/ no rubbing, so 285/70/17's will work for your truck with the same results. They're only 0.1" different in diameter. you can do an internet search for tire size calculator and get the dimensions. The diameter of these tires are just under 33 inches. I'm considering going to the 285/75/16's, but i'm concerned the mud flaps will rub in the front. Anyone had this problem?

You can get 305/70r17's on their, that's what I run. For sand dunes you might need to look at a TSL tire or something similar but you are gonna pay out the nose and not get a very good road life out of them (20,000 max) You could go with Mud Dawg, Maxxis Buckshot Mudders, Maxxis Bighorns, Mud Kings or anything of that nature and probably not spend as much, but you probably won't get as good of performance in the sand. NAyway, as was already stated Wandell will be by soon and probably give much better advice.

If you are gonna keep your stock wheels, I would suggest a 285/70-17 (33x11.50) BFG AT KO or Toyo Open Country AT or 295/70-17 (34x12.00) Nitto Terra Grappler. You can fit a 315/70-17 (35x12.50) on your truck using the OEM 17x7.5 inch wheels, but it is a very tight fit and there will be some minor rubbing. I would not go that big unless you plan on a lift kit in the near future.

Thanks to everyone for the reply. I found a pretty good deal on some 285 70 17 BF Mud Terrains so I think I am gonna go order them today. Can't wait to see what they will look like on. Thanks again.

Do you guys think that 33x12.5x17 would fit on a stock 2001 lariat crew 4x4? I want the **** Cepek Fun Country II's but they don't come in the right sizes.

Any noticeable difference in fuel mileage with 285's? What about towing approx 3500# trailer, any noticeable decrease in torque, such as downshifting when going up hills that didn't use to downshift on w/ the trailer? (Going from 265's to 285's)

There'll be a little difference, but not much...
