Another tire size question...what fits on 16"x10" wheel?

Greetings. When I purchased my 2002 F150, it already had aftermarket wheels on it...American Racing Diamondbacks in 16x10. The tires are Mastercraft Courser C/Ts in 285/75/16. The tires are worn very bad now (though plenty of tread left). One front is cupped very badly...I need to replace these soon.

I was doing some reading on Cooper's and Mastercraft's websites, and it appears that the smallest size they recommend for a 16x10 rim is a 305/75/16. Could that be part of the reason to my cupped front tires?

Is anyone else running 285/75/16 tires on a 16x10?

Part two...will a 305/75/16 clear? I'm guessing it won't...that's equivalent to a 35"x12.5" tire.

The truck is a 2002 F150 supercab flareside FX4.

Thanks for your help! I appreciate it!!

I am running 285/75/16 on 16x10 Eagle alloys don't have enough miles on them to see any wear but I find it hard to believe the tires are cupping from a 10" wheel

305 75 16's are a 33" tire and 285's are a 32 inch tire, 315 75 16's are 35's. 305's should clear without any problems I had a set of them before my lift and they cleared fine. I doubt your tires are cupping from the wheels being to wide. You probably either have your tire pressure wrong or you need an alignment.

285/75/16 - 32.83 x 11.22

305/75/16 - 34.01 x 12.00

This is based on the tire size calculator......

Size also varies by brand of tire. But basically 285's are a mid to high 32 and 305's are a low to mid 33. I've owned 265's, 285's, 295's, 305's, and 315's all 75-16. My 315's are a high 34 when actually mounted. My 285's were a high 32 when mounted and my 305's were a low 33 when mounted.

I've seen a few trucks running 285/75R16 on a 16x10, I dont think its the cause of your problem...might have more to do with the PSI you are running, or maybe an alignment issue(?).

You can fit a 305/70R16 (which is generally a 33x12.5 inch tire) on your rims, but you'll probably have to crank your torsion bars and maybe trim some of the plastic valence. The truck will look good though. Eventually this is the setup Im looking to do. Ive actually seen some people fit 305's on the 16x10 with no modding necessary at all...

Good lookin truck BTW

Tire size is not your problem. I have over 45,000 miles on my 285/75-16 BFG AT KO's (on 16x10's) with no problems. The cupping is probably because of bad shocks, the front end out of alignment or not rotating the tires frequently enough (or a combination of those).
Also, I have never seen a 305/75-16 tire. You probably meant to type 305/70-16 (33x12.50) or 315/75-16 (35x12.50). I would go with a 305/70-16 tire with your wheels. You may have to trim a little more plastic off the front bumper's lower valance, but they will fit. Your valance is more than likely already trimmed since you have 16x10 wheels.

Thanks for the replies!!

The front valance hasn't been trimmed yet, as it is new. I bought the truck as a salvage.

It was Mastercraft's website that listed the minimum size tire for a 10" wide rim is a 305/75/16. I can't remember where I saw that it equaled a 35/12.5 though.

Here is an example of the tire problem I've got...I was told this was called cupping. It's a little hard to see in the picture, but very noticeable in person.

I wanted to make sure this wasn't due to stretching a 285/75 to fit on a 10" wide rim before I bought the same size again.

I probably will go with the 285s again...I need all the gas mileage help I can get...lol!

One more question on the 305s...are they going to stick out any more to the point that I will need flares? I can't imagine them actually being that much wider, but as broke as I am, I'd hate to get surprised with that.

Thanks for the help!

EDIT: I just realized there are two 'wheel and tire' sections...please move this if I put it in the wrong section. Thanks!

THe 305/70-16's are basically a 33x12.50 tire. The 285/75-16's are basically a 33x11.50 tire. The two sizes are gonna be almost identical in height, but the 305's are about one inch wider than the 285's. So, they would only stick out 1/2 inch farther.
Also, you are right, those tires are cupped badly. Most likely, it's cause by one or more of the reasons I listed. I have the same size tire and wheel and havn't had any problems in over 45,000 miles.

The term salvage added to your last statement and having cupped tires may have answered your question

Don't think so. It got a new frame and lined up perfectly. I've put 20,000 miles on it.

Thanks wandell...can I ask what tire pressure you run, and how often you rotate?

I run 40psi front and rear and rotate them every 6000 miles.

285/75/16 tire pressure?

You run 40 psi all the way around? Doesn't it say on the tire that 285/75/16's are supposed to be run at a minimum of 65 PSI or is that just my brand of tire?
Could I run a little low on my tire pressure? The ride seems a little bouncy when I hit even small potholes. Bump steers really bad.

I have a 2003 Stock-height XLT SuperCrew 5.4L RWD with 16x10 American Racing Ventura's with 285/75/16 Cooper Discoverer ATR's.
Also I was thinking of running a different set of tires after I use these up. Can I run a 305/70/16 on my 16"x10" rims or will it rub worse than the 285/75's ?

Does anyone else have a problem with the RF tire (285/75/16) rubbing on the Front Sway bar when turning a hard Left?

It's stock height and I was going to replace it with a new thicker Hellwig front sway bar and new Moog Sway Bar End links since one of them has lost a bushing anyways but is the thicker sway bar going to exasperate my rubbing issue?
I already cut the lower rear portion of the inner fender on both sides and my tires still occasionally hit if I'm turning and going over bumps such as my driveway or into a parking lot. Am I going to have to lift it and if so how much? 1"? 2"? 3" would be the most I think I could handle.

Just put new front inner and outer wheel bearings, Moog upper control arms, Moog upper and lower ball joints, Monroe Reflex Front and Rear Shocks, 4 wheel seals, and did an alignment last week.
