Getting New Wheels/Tires, Advice Needed Please!

I'm finally going to have a chance to get a new set of wheels and tires for my truck, but I've got a few questions.

The truck is an 02 Screw 4x4 and is stock height except for the torsion bars being cranked up. Currently has 265/70/17s on it.

I'm not positive on the size I want yet, but I'm leaning towards Chrome Helo Maxx 6's with 325/60/18 Nitto TG's. I don't know what offset/ backspacing or wheel width I want to use though.

I want the tires to stick out just a hair past the top of the fenders (maybe 1/8" or so). Offset/backspacing is going to be very important to me. I want just the right stance. The OEM wheels are tucked too far into the fenders for my taste.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I'd also love to see some 97-03 trucks with this size wheel/tire combo on so I can get an idea of what it will look like. I haven't seen too many 97-03s like this, mostly just the newer body.

Any input on the best looking wheel and tire diameter is also welcome. I'm looking to get the perfect wheel/tire sidewall ratio for a clean, agressive, but still 4x4 look.

Thanks!
Brian

To me, a 33x12.50 tire on a 10 inch wide wheel looks perfect. You want a wheel with 4 1/2 inches of backspacing. I'm not sure of the specs on the Helo. For an 18, a 325/60-18 (33x13.00) would be a good choice.

So an 18x10 with 4.5" backspacing and a 325/60/18 would look good on a stock height 02 4x4? If I were to use an 18x9, what backspacing would give the "flush with the fenders" look? I know a 33" tire isn't too tall, but 13" is pretty wide, would I have any rubbing?

How much farther can I expect this wheel/tire combo to stick out farther than the stockers once they are mounted?

And finally, do you guys think this would look good? I've never seen pictures of this combo on an 01-03 Screw, but I think it would look pretty nice.

I'm still open to suggestions, though!

A 10 inch wide wheel with 4.5 inches of backspacing will put the edge of the tire/wheel just about even with the edge of the fender flares. You will have to crank up the torsion bars and trim some plastic off your front valance to fit this combo. Going with a 9 inch wide wheel with 4.5 inches of backspacing would give you a little bit more room.

Wandell, thanks a ton for your help, I've got a few more questions for you.

The only 2 18" Helo wheels I can find in a 5x135mm bolt pattern are both 9" wide. One has an offset of +10 and 5-3/8" BS, the other is -12 offset with 4.5" BS. Will one of these still give me the look I am going for(flush, or just a hair outside the fender flares)?

If its going to be neccesary for the look I want, I'll find another wheel to use. Maybe a different 18" wheel, or maybe a 17x9 with a 285/70/17 tire?

What do you think will look best? I am still very open to suggestions, and would love to see some 01-03 Screws with 33" tires of any rim size.

I've done some more research and I'm worried that an 18x9 with 4.5" of backspacing with the 325/60/18 won't stick out far enough. I've looked in Wandell's gallery and I want the same stance as he's got with the tires sticking out. I may have to use another wheel

Brian, I think those with the 325's will give you the look you are after. Remember, thos 325/60's are 40mm wider than my 285's.

I went to see a Friend of mine that works at Discount tire today and he helped me decide on what to do. I'm going to use the 18x9 Helo Maxx 6 with a -12mm offset and 4.5" backspacing, mounted on a 285/65/18 BFG All-Terrain. He promises this will give me the stance I am looking for.

The grand total came up to $2000 even including Discount's lifetime warranty, chrome lugs, valve stems, mounted, balanced, etc...

Do you guys think this will give me what I'm looking for, and is this a good deal?

I haven't ordered them yet, I've got to wait a few more weeks for my tax refund now...

That combo is gonna tuck in one inch farther than mine, just to give you an idea. Those tires are the same height and width as my 285/75-16 BFG AT KO's.

Yeah, I was afraid of that. Do you think it would still look good? Would there still be some part of the tire (if not the tread, maybe the bulge of the sidewall?) sticking out farther than the fender flares? Do you have any close-ups of how far your tires stick out? There is a frontal shot in the gallery, but its not real clear.

If I need a 18x10 with 4.5" BS to get the look I want, am I correct in assuming I would need 3.5" of BS to get the same look with an 18x9? Unfortunately, I can't find a wheel I like with either of these measurements. I really want the Maxx 6 but if it is going to be tucked in too far I'll go with something else. My buddy at Discount seemed sure that The Helo would give me the look I wanted?? I don't know what to do anymore?

Yeah, I have some pics in my gallary. Just click the little camera icon. You are also right about a 9 inch wide wheel with 3.5 inches of backspacing sticking out the same as a 10 with 4.5 inches.

I guess the bottom line is, would this still look good? I have searched and searched, but can't find any pictures of another 97-03 with a 9" wide wheel and -12 offset.

The 9" wide wheel should stick out 1.5" farther than the stocker, right(stocker is 4.5" BS)? If I unbolt a wheel and set it out 1.5" farther than it would normally bolt up (just to look at it, not to drive it, lol) this should tell me where the new wheel will sit, right?

I've considered the 16x10 Helo to get the stance I want, but I really like the look of the larger wheel.
Also, the 16x10 Helo uses -25 offset. That is 4.5" BS, correct?

Suggestion!

If it were my truck I would go with a 18X9.5 or 10 rim, but man you should really check out Panther rims they have some killer 4X4 looking rims. I have a 98 ford 4x4 and I got 20's on it but Panther makes an awesome 4x4 rim.

I've got my heart set on the Helo's and now I just need to decide between 16x10s and 18x9s. Ideally I'd get 18x10s but they don't make them, and like I said, I've kind of got my heart set on them.

I'm leaning towards the 18x9 with a 285/65 BFG all-terrain and hoping they stick out far enough!
