Need A/T Tire Recommendation

Our nonprofit has a 2001 F-150 that we use on and off road on the Channel Islands. We're currently running BFG All Terrain LT265-70-R17. The tires wear very quickly, and we'd like to know if there is an alternative that would save us long-term money. Our last set of BFGs was installed in February of last year, and they're ready for replacements.

Im also coming up on 40k miles on mine with quite a bit of tread left, Im interested to know how many miles you have on the tires as well.

I suppose you could look at the Bridgestone Dueler AT REVO...Ive heard they get pretty good tread life.

Also, depending on what kind of of-road use you get out of the tires (and how often they go offroad), that kind of tread life might be warranted no matter what tire you put on there. At my work, we drove almost 90% off road (turn rows, gravel roads, etc) and they dont last very long at all (that is, assuming a thorn doesnt get in there or something else). The gravel roads will especially kill tread life...

I'll throw a vote in for Michelin LTX A/T's, just not sure they are available in that size. I've got LT265/75R16's on my 03 with 83K on the clock. Tires still have roughly 1/3 of the tread left. Should get 100K from them easily. I've also had really good luck with BFG's AT, but they are a harsher tire due to the extra sidewall ply's they've got. Can't go wrong either way....

Good luck

Define "wear very quickly." I've yet to hear of anyone getting less than 50k miles out of the BFG AT's. Despite Tirerack's survey results, I think the P-rated Revos will not last as long on average as the BFG AT. Maybe the LT Revos would be similar, but it's a very new tire and people don't have 50k+ miles on them yet.

If you wnat something to last longer, the only one i can think of is the Michelin LTX M/S. It's not an AT tire, but a great tire that will probably work well in most people's situation. they just don't have the AT look than many people want.

I have over 45,000 miles on my BFG AT KO's and expect to make it to 60,000miles. I don't think you are gonna get much better than that.

Put another vote in for the BFG AT KO's. I have never seen anything that outlasts them. You can try something else but I think you'll find the BFG to be among the best for wear. You must be using them in a very harsh environment, or putting alot of miles on them in a years time.

Thumbs up Definitely a Harsh Environment!

Thanks to all for your feedback - yeah, the islands take are a tough environment. We go through the Vibram soles on our boots so quickly, we are ineligible for warranties!

I too have always thought BFG AT tires were the BEST, longest lasting ATs out there. I put 25k on my Ranger (cornering HARD, always) and they still looked great, they EASILY had 50%+ tread left on them no problem. I know of people that have MORE than once gotten 80k+ on BFG ATs.

/me thinks you are just REALLY beating them up and any tire will suffer a similar short life.

I like the Toyo Open Country AT myself...

Here is a shot of mine with 35,000 miles on them. Granted, mostly hwy, but they see gravel every now and then...

I've heard good and bad with BFG's. Terra Grapplers are really soft. I don't know 100% of the terrain style that your running but I've had customers come in to discount tire with Chunks taken out of BFGs from mild rock crawling. I would possibly suggest the Wranglers, or maybe even a good Interco SX but they may be overkill for you.
