Question about tires

Alright well i have a 2003 f-150 2wd with a 3 inch body lift. Im currently running 255 tires on 16 inch wheels. Im planning on buying new tires since i put on the 3 inch lift. I was thinking a 285/75/16 tire. However i was talking to my neighbor and he was telling me to be cautious about this because apparently the computer runs off sensor on the back wheels and if you put a tire on that is too big it can cause things to run improperly. Id like to know if there is any truth to this? I realize a bigger tire will cause a decrease in gas mileage but i never heard of it causing anything that bad. Id just like to know if there will be any problems running a 285 tire. As a note my truck has a 4.2L v6 w/5speed if that helps. Any help would be greatly appreciated thanks

It will cause your speedometer/odometer to be off. I went from 255's to 285's also and mine is off 5mph at 60mph. It sounds like you are already aware of the affects on your power.
