All terrains or Mud terrains?

I am getting new wheels/tires this weekend and have been going back and forth on the issue of AT v. MT. I would prefer to get some MTs, but am concerned with tread wear. I know that ATs will obviously get more mileage, but what can I expect from MTs? I do a bunch of highway driving. Is there an MT out there that would give me 40k? If not, I think that I will go with the Terra Grapplers. I would love to have that Mudder look though.

I just started doing the same research and it looks like the a/t is a realistic option. Love the way the muds look but I dont do that much off road to justify the muds.

I have almost 45K hard mi. on my ProComp AT's and 40K of that was on the narrow stock wheels so they were pinched really badly. The outer treads are MAYBE half worn where as judging by the centers I'll need to replace them this winter / next spring. I've been very impressed, I only wish they didn't weigh 65 lbs. a piece.

With MT's you'll likely pay the same price, but will only get 20K mi. tops out of a set. Makes no since to me unless you do more mudding than highway driving. If you insist on muds, I'd look at the Maxxis Buckshots and they're super cheap. Don't be fooled though, Maxxis makes the best tires I've ever seen for anything on two wheels...I've just never run their passanger tires.

BFG AT's, ProComp AT's, and those badass (but expensive) Nitto TerraGrapplers all look like muds, but to me, better because they're not just solid slugs of rubber. I plan to look into the TerraGrapplers but I'd have to find a deal on them to get them as cheaply as the ProComps, and last I checked I didn't think they came in a 33x12.50R17.

I've heard guys that have said they have gotten 35-40k out of sets of BFG Mud Terrains and Goodyear MTR, one of those guys I talked to at a gas station had 35'' MTR on his F-250 Work Truck and he said he was on his second set and had gotten 40k out the first and it was looking like he would get the same on the current set. If you really want a lot of miles out of an aggressive tire get the BFG AT KO's they wear like iron. The Nitto's are actually pretty reasonably priced and look sweet but dont expect them to last as long as the BFG's.

BFG all-terrain vs. mud-terrain

[IMG][/IMG]I had bfg all-terrains on my stock rims before i put a lift on my truck and 35" bfg mud-terrains and MT'S rims. i like the mud-terrains alot better they are not to loud with windows open and handle snow and deep puddles better than all-terrains did.

Ive been running a set of BFG All terrain KOs for over 50k now. And looking at them now, they look to have ANOTHER 50k in them

Best tires Ive ever bought.

Perfect tire for the daily driver and weekend offroader IMO.

I just put a set of Nitto Terragrapplers 305/50/20's on my '04 SCrew yesterday. I can't comment on the longevity of them obviously. So far, here is what I have noticed from the stock Rugged Trail's. The ride is a lot firmer (in my opinion that is good, however I am used to 3/4 ton trucks), there is more road noise than the Rugged Trails (which you would expect) but it is not annoying. That's all I know about Nitto's. As far as BFG, I just put a second set of A/T Duelers on my Dodge 3/4 ton and I think I got about 40k out of them. Come to think of it, I have spent an a**load on tires lately!!! There's my two cents, for what it's worth.

M/Ts are nice if you don't wanna have a conversation to listen to. If you like poor handling, less mpg and a chance to buy tires more often then these should be perfect. If you would like to be a NASCAR tire changer these are good for practicing because you must rotate them more often.

i ran a set of 37x12.5x17 BFG M/T's on my f150 and wrecked it with about 10k on them.......the tread had only dropped 1/32 of an inch

as for gas mileage, the same size a/t and m/t shouldnt be that dramatic of a difference

the road noise was minimal and damn they went through alot of s#*t offroad, i liked them much better than my old 33" A/Ts

Go with what you like.. Your gonna spend the $$ so you might as well get what you want.. The AT's although are some of the best tires out there..
