16x8 vs 16x10 with 35 inch BFG AT

Hello

I have a 1999 4x4 Expedition with 5.4L in her. I just had a 3 inch PA body lift installed by 4wheelparts. Basically I need wheels and tires before I can start driving her. I am going to get 315/70R16 BFG AT's on ProComp 1069s wheels. (similar to MT Classic 2s) I am trying to decide if I want the 16x10 rim or the 16x8 rim. Can you please tell me the differences between the two. I am told the 16x10 will make the tire stick out to the side a little more. But what are the pros and cons (ie decreased tire life, etc). I am leaning toward the 16x10's. Can anyone shoot me some quick advice. Thanks. MS

id worry more about rubbing than sticking out . . sticking out in moderation isnt a bad thing . . your tires will barely go past your fenders wtih 16x10 on your setup. however youd rub horribly

id recommend you choose 16x8s purely to minimize rubbing

Will the 16x8s affect the performance of the tire? I was thinking the 16x10s would work due to the fact its a 4x4 so it sits higher to begin with? Oh by the way, this is basically just used on the street, so rubbing offroad wouldnt be an issue, and i dont mind trimming the front.

nope 16x10 wont work easily. even if someone on here eggs you onto getting them youll be pretty pissed off wtih the rub

your tires wont wear worse with 16x8, they fit just fine

Either wheel will work fine with the 35's. If you go with 16x10's, you will have to crank up your torsion bars and trim a little plastic off your front bumper's lower valance for clearance. Personally, I'd go with the 16x10's, but I'm willing to put up with some minor rubbing. I have 16x10's with 33's and there are some pics in my gallary that show how far they stick out. Mine are just about even with the edge of my fender flares up front, and actually tuck in a little out back.

Wandell...

trimming the valence is fine.... will they rub on the inside of the fender up front? Also... this is ONLY up front right? The back tires clear fine?

Oh I already ordered the 16x10's so ive got no choice now!.... i just wanna know what to expect....

On the matter of the torsion bar (ive done it in the past).... what if I put coil spring spacers at all 4 corners instead of doing a TT? Would that work as well? Im just not familiar with the spacers. Im leaning toward spacers b/c i could prolly add another inch of total lift from them.

One more thing how much did your MPG decrease.... im only expecting to get 10-12mpg after this.

Thanks. MS

you will be fine with torsion bar twist or 7700 torsion bars. nothing extreme or they will sag very rapidly

you have no coil springs on your truck.

The Expy's have coil springs in the rear instead of leaf springs like your F-150. If you want to raise the rear, just add a taller lift block or an add-a-leaf.

So i could crank the torsion bars an inch in the front, then add a 1 inch coil spring spacer in the back? I just want this thing to be level.. Thanks MS

You can, but odds are you will be happy with just cranking the torsion bars up enough to level the truck. If you want to lift the rear and inch or so, yeah, add the Daystar spacers. Just don't put so much preload on your torsion bars that your CV joints are a severe angle. This will cause premature wear.
Also, forgive my previous post. I forgot for a minute you had an Expy and not an F-150. I was just having a brain fart!

So crank the bars an inch? and an inch spacer in the back? Does that sound good? Also, did you install your spacer yourself? Level of difficulty.....

I installed my body lift myself. It's not that hard, it just takes a while because there are just a lot of small steps. However, the Performance Accessories body lifts are very complete and come with good instructions.
I don't have coil spring spacers and I've never installed a set of coil spacers myself, but it looks to be a relatively easy job on the rear of Expy's and similar vehicles. I had a set of Daystar spacers on my old Grand Cherokee, but I wound up having them installed by a shop after the owner said he would do it for free with the purchase of a set of wheels. He said the rear was very easy and my Jeeps rear suspension was almost identical to your Expy's.

Thanks,

Im having the BL done by 4wheel parts for 520 bucks. Its just easier to drop it off and pick it up ya know. Ive never done spacers, thats why I was asking if they are difficult or not. So do you think a 1 inch TT and 1 inch spacer would be good?

Also, if I were to do the TT/spacer.... should I do it before or after the body lift... or it doesnt matter?

Thanks man. Ill post pictures when its done. MS
