Your way sounds easier.Once my buddy told me to break them to get them off, that was my full intention. When I broke my 3lb hand sledge, I was trying to get them off in 1 peice....thinking that was how it was done. But in order to break them, it was time for the big sledge.....and it didn't take many hits before they cracked.
Now you know for the next time..........LOL.
