Rear Wheel Lock-Up

This morning I backed out of my drive and started to the next corner, about 100 feet. My speed could not have been more than 15 mph, when the left rear wheel locked up abruptly, skidding to a stop. I was shocked by this and at a loss as to what would cause it. After a few seconds I made a right turn again at very low speed and the same thing occured. I slowly backed my truck home down the street into my drive and took my other car. Later this afternoon I drove the truck again using extrem caution and went about 20 miles with no other occurance. It is a 2001 4x4 off road package with 72K miles and still under Ford warranty. What could cause this problem? Any help would be appreciated.

Had an 01, and can't remember if the rears are disk or drum. Either way, I wouldn't be surprised if some hardware is broke, either in the drum brakes or in the e-brake portion of of the disk. Either way, the only way to find out is pull the wheel and look.

E brake shoes!

Kingfish,
Your were on the mark. I removed the rotor from the right rear and out fell the lining for one of the e brake shoes. I have never seen a lining delaminate from the metal.I am glad I found this and shutter to think where I would have ended up if this thing had applied a lockup at highway speed. I will be replacing the whole set Monday.
Thanks for your help.

Glad I could help. Any sign of rust on the backing plate. That could have caused the lining to delaminate. That and age.

No rust in or on e brake

No rust is found on any of the hardware everything looks clean and rust free. After reading the post on this sight about the e brake lining coming off it would seem to be a common problem. Has anyone approched Ford about this being a warranty issue? I replaced the rear rotors and pads at 68K miles they were cutting metal. None of the trucks (F-150) I have owned with rear drum brakes would get less than 100K miles on a set of rear shoes, why are these rear disc so hard on the pads and rotors?

Can't say I had any trouble. Had 70k on my 01 and OE rear pads. Also didn't have any trouble with the e-brake, although I rarely if ever use it.
