Biggest tire on stock 16x7 wheel? 97 250 LD

People at tire stores are telling me, the biggest I can go is 265 75 16. This just sucks!!!!!!! I'm saving for my 6inch suspension lift and 35's on a 17x8inch rim, but I need tires now. Anybody put 285's or 305's on a 16x7inch rim?
Stock height also, so how much trimming involved?
Thanks.

If it's a 4x4 you can easily fit a 285/75-16 or 305/70-16,.

Dont always believe what they say. My F250 has 16" rims with 285/85s on them and they fit just perfect

Yes its a 4x4, stock height. I don't mind trimming the front valance either. Do 285's or 305's come with a 10.5 width? Or are they 12.5? Is there is a limited number that you can be bigger then the rim? Thanks guys.

The first number in the metric sizing system is the width of the tire in millimeters. A 285/75-16 is essentialy a 33x11.50 tire while a 305/70-16 is essentially a 33x12.50-16 tire. If you check the tire manufacturers website, they will list their approved rim width. A 16x7 wheel is slightly too narrow for a 305mm wide tire. If you are keeping those wheels you will be better off with a 285/75-16.

Wandell, thanks. The guy at a tire store was explaining about the metric sizes. He said if you take the 2nd number like say 50, that means the sidewall is 50% of the tread width. A bigger sidewall is 70,75,etc. But he still said the biggest I should go on that rim is a 265 70,or 75, 16. I saw a couple of tires in that size, and they looked pretty nice. he showed me a 305, and that is very wide. I was thinking that the 305, 285,265, numbers were the height, but its really the width.
I have 245 75 R16's now, so the 265 should be a nice difference.
Have you heard anything about the Duellers? I think the name is AT Revo Duellers. They look nice and he said a few people liked them more then the Toyo Open country AT's.
Thanks

I'm running a 305 on a factory steel wheel on a 1999 F250 LD, the lower front valance needs just a bit of trimming

Hi Garster, thanks for the reply. Do you know what the height is of that tire? What kind of tire did you get, and is your rim 16x7 inches?
I can't believe you have a 250 LD, I thought I was the only one LOL. You have the 7 lug?
So many problems with lift, and wheel choices. But I'm starting to find things for these trucks. I love the truck, and don't want to get rid of it, plus can't afford another one, but it would be great to find other people with these trucks.
Also, when you got the tires mounted, did the people say anything, like you shouldn't go that big on that rim, or anything like that?

I think they are about 32" tall, Procomp Xterrains 305/70/16. Most 305's will be around 32" tall, The wheels are the 16x7 steel wheel 7 lug, should be the same as yours. I think they were the only wheel available for the 7 lug trucks. I purchased the tires online about 3 years ago and had them mounted at a local tire store. The only thing that i was told was that i would need to adjust the air pressure for good wear because the recommended rim width is 8" for this tire. They really fill the wheel well nicely, i have the 3.73 gears so it didn't effect the performance of the truck much.
I run these tires in the winter months and for the rest of the year i have a set of AR Baja 16x8 rims with 315/75/16 Cooper all terrains on it. the 315's barely fit without a lift, and wouldn't do the 315's if i had the choice again. Also the standard 2" or 3" body lift kit for the F150's will work on these trucks i'm told

Garster, I just got back from another tire dealer, this guy deals direct with Toyo , and is the main dealer out here in Long Island NY. He supplies most of the truck shops with these tires. He said he wouldn't even think about 305's on my rims, he said he would sell me the tires but wouldn't mount them. Hey you gotta respect that. He said 285's would be pushing it, but he would do it. He took me in the back and pulled a 245 75 16 like the one on my truck, and then a 265 75 and a 285 75 16 so I could see the difference. I'm going with the 285. Its 40 more a tire but the tire is a 10 ply which I like. So he said 175.00 a tire mounted and balanced. So I hope it all works.
Thanks to everybody's input.

285's are a good choice and will make your truck look better, i think the 245's that came stock with the 250 LD look to small. I also noticed that the larger tire gave me a smoother ride.

245's are definetly too small. Can't wait, hopefully they will be on by sat. 11/11.

I have seen a 4x4 off road supercab with 315/70/16 tires, goodyear wrangler at/s I'm sure, but you know what? It looked waaaayyyy to fat a tire for that rim. I don't think this guy jacked the t-bars at all, and no trimming. It was wild, but a little big for that rim. Not sure if it rubbed or what, it was bieng serviced and was parked outside so couldn't ask, Sunday too!
