Question 18s or 20s

I have the AS 2.5 leveling kit installed on my '05 SCrew. I've been having a hard time choosing between 18 and 20 inch wheels. I know it's a tired wheel (*edit* no pun intended), but I really like the Moto Metal 951 and there aren't many around here w/ that rim.

The 18x9 has +30mm offset and 4 1/2" backspace. The 20x10 has -18 offset and 4 3/4" backspace. According to the guy at the shop, the 18" will fit no problem, but the 20" will have rubbing issues. Also, he says he had tried to mount the new 305/65 on two different trucks/setups and couldn’t get them balanced. But I believe that was on 20” wheels.

Ultimately, I guess what I’m asking is which package I should go with. 18” w/ 285/65R18 or will the 20’s fit (with 285/65R20)? Is he nuts about the tire? Would a 305/65R18 be ok?

Thanks.

I'd go with the 18's and 286/65/18's

the 286 is a very hard to find width

Its up to your preference and budget. I am trading up for a 20 becasue i am going for bigger tires. I liked the 18's but dont want the wheels to look small on a large tire.

I like 18's for the fact that it's the same size as stock and they can be on all year long if you like. I see most people with 20's take them off in the winter, while those with 18's leave em on. You can also use your stock tires if need be with 18's.

A 285/65-18 is a 32.7" tall tire, while the 285/65-20 is a 34.7" tall tire. The 20's won't fit. Also, are you sure on the backspacing on that 18x9 wheel? The dealer I am working with says that the +30mm version of the 951 has a 6.1" backspace.

First, thanks for the replies. I'll take everyone's advice and go with the 18s.

Not totally. I didn't have the paperwork from Trick Trucks with me when I first posted, so I was using some information I got online via this link: http://www.wheelsforless.com/search_...uct_ID=MM95189

I checked a chart that I found in antoher post and you are right, it would appear that a +30 offset is around 6 inches.

If I understand how this works, basically that means that 6" of the rim will be behind the hub. I think the stock is a 4" backspace. I'm guessing that either there is a different Offset/backspace offering in an 18x9 or 6" isn't a problem.

With 6" of backspacing, the 285/65/20s will be fine with a leveling kit.

Right, 6" of BS on a 9" rim would work, but his rim backspacing he posted was just over 4", so they won't fit on his combo.
Plus the 285/65-20 is an insanely high priced tire. Looks good, but mucho dinero.

Ok... so I placed my order Friday afternoon: 18x9 Moto Metal 951 and they have some BFG 305/65R18 that have been mounted (the balance issue from 1st post), so I offered to be a guinea pig. They weren't using a MM951 in the previous attempts, so hopefully it will work this time. Everything should be in house and ready to be mounted later this week.

Here we go... 18X9 Moto Metal 951 w/ 305/65R18

Mods to date:

OEM black 5" step bars
Airaid CAI
AS 2.5"
Moto Metal 951 18x9
BFG 305/65R18

hopefully I'll be installing my Bushwacker Pocket Flares tomorrow. I got them back from the body shop today.

*edit* added the Airaid to the mod list. Can't believe I forgot that.
