Rim Fitment Question

I own a 2004 FX4 Supercrew that has the stock 18" rims. My question is can I go down to 17" rims? Will 17's clear the rotors? My buddy just got an '07 XLT 4X4 and it has 17" steel wheels. Is there a difference in the diameter of the brakes on the XLT and the FX4? Anyone gone down an inch on an FX4?

Thanks in advance!

I havent been around since I sold my '03 FX4 a few years ago.......

You can go down to 17" OE rims with no problems. If you have had the TSB for the 04 brakes where they replaced the rotors and calipers, some 17" aftermarket rims will not fit.

What aftermarket rims (17") will fit? Also, TSB?

My 04 Lariat had 18" OEM wheels and I went down to 17's with no problem, still not a bad idea to check them out first.

Not sure. Search on the site here for those that have gone to aftermarket 17" on 05 and up F150's. Those will fit.

Some people have said that there are a few 17's that won't fit over the calipers. Check the fitment before you buy. Better to be safe than sorry.

Ford changed brake calipers sometime during the 05 model year. This is causing fitment problems with some, not all, aftermarket 17 inch wheels. You should be fine unless you had your brakes replaced by Ford with the larger parts.

Thanks for the comments, everyone! I'm pretty set on the **** Cepek DC-1 17" wheels, and some 315/70/17 BFG AT's. Love those tires, I have had them on 2 trucks in the past. Some minor trimming of the valence will be in order, but that's OK with me!

2.5 daystar level kit. been working some numbers, and the 315/70/17 will only be 1.2" additional radius over the stock 275/65/18 that I have now. Do you think that the 4.53"backspacing on the DC-1 will cause an issue?

After doin some thinnin and research, for the price, and elimination of potential problems, I have decided to go with Eagle 178 18X9's (5"BS) and BFG AT 305/65/18 tires (33.7" Diameter) I think this will be the best combination of slightly larger tires with some nice looking rims, all of which will not break the bank (around $1700)

Yeah, I think that will be a better choice, but you will probably have to do some trimming.

Chum, I think you're better off going with the 305x18's they are close to 1" shorter then the 315x17's. I had the 315's on my 04 Lariat on 17x9 Americans and the only place they rubbed was on the lower wheelwells when backing or turning out of my driveway. But boy did they look good! Good luck!
