Tire Size vs. Performance!!

O.k like many f150 owners with the 4.6 i'm some what dissapointed in my trucks performance which is why I'm going to be making a call to Troyer very soon. That being said, I'm also looking for more ground clearance being that I have a 2wd. So new tires are a must and I can't decide between 265/75/16 or 285/75/16. I already have 2" lift coils for the front and aal's for the rear just waiting to be installed and hopefully a 3" body lift as well this summer. I'm excited about getting my long awaited performance boost but if getting the stance I want will just throw it back to stock speed, why bother? I realize that the bigger tire you go the harder it is for your truck to turn that extra rubber. I'd love to just get new gears put in but the budget just doesn't have it right now with everything else going on. Now I don't know exactly what gears I have right now but, I have a 97 lariat with the 4.6 and full tow package. So i'm guessing 3.55 or 3.73 with limited slip. I also plan on getting a locker put in if i get the new gears. So if anyone can help me finally get some new tires that be great. (Wandell).
Thanks

I've got the 265/75/16 on my 2001 with no lift and I think they look good but if your getting a lift you might want to go bigger. For power Gears are the best bang for the buck.

If you already are dissappointed with performance with 30 or 31" tires, larger/heavier tires obviously won't help. Gears for 2wd should be <$500 installed. Go for 4.11 with a 33" tire and I think you'll be pleased.

My '98 has the gearing code located on the sticker in the door jam. The code should also tell you if you have a limited slip. If you already have limited slip, and if your new ring and pinion will work with it, then forget the locker.

You should also consider selling your truck and getting a 5.4 with the options you want rather than pouring money into your '97 with the 4.6

I'd love to buy a new truck but right now with school fulltime it's kinda hard. It's hard enough trying to fit 40 hours a week as it is. Plus if I buy a new truck chances are it wouldn't be a ford. Sorry guys

These axle codes are from a 2005 but they might be the same for your truck
Axle Type

* 19 - 3.55 non-limited slip
* 25 - 4.10 non-limited slip
* 26 - 3.73 non-limited slip
* 27 - 3.31 non-limited slip
* B5 - 4.10 limited slip
* B6 - 3.73 limited slip
* H9 3.55 limited slip
