What tire to choose?

I am looking at buying eitehr a bf goodrich mud terrain or the bf goodrich all terrain tire in a 285 75 16. I do a ton of high way driving and want a tire that will handle well with not a bunch of noise. But when im off road i am OFF ROAD if you catch my drift so i need something with a grip. I like the mud terrain but am worried about it not wearing as well as the all terrain. What is everyones opinions?

Thumbs up

Have you checked into the nitto terra grappler. I have them on my truck and they are a great tire. very little road noise. they handle really well in the snow im yet to have them off road, but iv only heard great things about them off the road. Iv heard with the way the tread pattern is it clean out real well and not much crap sticks in them. imo id go with these unless your dead stuck on the bf's. check em out though.

Not trying to say that BFG isn't good. I think they're a little overpriced. I like Maxxis Buckshot Mudders. They don't have the 285 you're looking for, but they do have a 275 & 305. I can get a set of 33's for $500.

did you see the nittos in person, i wasnt really sure about them at first, but i culdnt pass up the deal, and ill tell you pics online dont do justice for them. i have the 295's on my truck and im really surprised the way they turned out they are alot better looking lug wise then what i thought. i figured theyd be almost like a street type tire deal, but they really arent, i culd get some pics up tamaro for you to see what they really look like. You also got to remember with the bigger lugs they are going to have more road noise with them. not sure if that is too big a deal for you or not.

Most people get 30-35k from the MT. 50k or so from the AT. If you like going through mud and other thick stiff like that, the MT is the only way to go. The AT will get clogged up and leave you stuck.

Sounds like the BFG AT KO is your best bet.

I have seen the nittos in person and just wasn't impressed. I was thinking that the AT's would be the best bet becuase of the fact that i drive a lot of highway miles but when im off road i always have aproblem with filling up the tread of at tires. How do the MT function in sand. Does anyone know?

Twintips,

I just purchased a set of BF Goodrich At's last night. Just for the hell of it, I drove around a bit to see what they where like. On the highway, they were great. They are slightly louder than the Gooryear RT/s's (street tire) that were stock on the truck. I also took the truck ditch banging in some snow. They were excellent as well. I know I have not had them for long, but they certainly are just as good as everyone says they are. If you have any other questions, let me know. Dave K.

Also is anyone running the Grabber AT2 from general. ITs got close to the same tread pattern of the bf goodrich All terrain. But it is getting better reviews and everyone says it is not as loud as tires in the same catagory.

Twintips,
I got 265/70-17. I wanted to stay with the stock size to avoid any screwing of of the speedometer and I didn't want to kill my gas milage. Dave K.

im running the same tire except on a 16 inch rim (265/ 75 16) and i loved that tire size. But i want to go up to the 265 75 16. I was just wondering if you had that size. im worried about ice and wet road traction. Can anyone shed some light on how they hold up?

I have had the BFG ATs for about 15000 miles and they are a pretty good tire IMO.I have had them in about every terrain and they have performed well.I'm not sure how much you are going to put it through but in a clay material they will clog.
