5" backspacing on 12.5" tire?

I'm considering putting ProComp Radial Mud Terrains (33 x 12.5) on my stock '03 f150 (torsion bars cranked up). I like the American Racing Assualt (17 x 8). It has 5" of backspacing; that seems extreme for such a wide tire. Will that lead to rubbing or require major trimming? Do you think I'd be better off with a 17 x 9 wheel with 4.5" backspace? Also, anyone know how bad the road noise is with those tires? Thanks in advance.

People running 35x12.50's on the OEM wheels (17x7.5 inches with 4.5 inches of backspacing) report minor rubbing on the frame at full steering lock so you should be ok with 33x12.50's. Personally, I think the 17x9 would look better. You may have to trim a little plastic off the front bumper's lower valance with those however.

I'm glad you asked that silver. I have been wondering the same thing myself. I am looking at some 18x9 wheels with 4.75" of bs and was wondering if they will rub. I am going to be using 35x12.50 tires with either a 9 or 10" wheel. What do ya'll recommend as far as backspacing for the two widths?...4.5, 4.75, or 5. (I'll be using a Rancho lift)

I just put my new wheels and tires on my 06 yesterday. I do have a 2 1/2" leveling kit on. I put on Pro Comp 1079 17x9 4.75 backspace with Pro Comp Xtreme AT's 305/65/17's (33x12.5). This combo looks awesome and I have zero rubbing. The only problem is you better like your tires sticking out from the wheel well! These tires ride smooth and are surprisingly quiet.

thanks

Thanks all. Went with a 17 x 9 pro-comp wheel (in black) & the 33x12.5 pro-comp mud terrains. Will post pics when I get them.

AsheFX4, any of those backspacings will work fine with 35's and a 4 inch Rancho lift. It just depends on how far you want your wheel/tire to stick out. Keep in mind your OEM wheels were either 17x7.5 or 16x7 inches with 4.5 inches of backspacing.

Thanks Wandell. I think I've got the backspacing thing figured out. I saw another thread with a link to a site that shows all the different dimensions/measurements at different widths and bs. Between that and browsing some of your posts I feel a little better about it.
