Seriously

So I'm finally ready to order my tires. I call up Firestone, as I'm a big fan of the Bridgestone Dueler REVO's and tell the guy I have the 2.5 AS leveling kit with 3" blocks going in and I want a 33" tire to replace the stockers.

I've seen plenty of people running 33" tires with the leveling kit and having no issues. So I tell him I'm looking for the 285/70R17's, as I'm sticking with the stock rims for now.

Now please tell me if I lost my mind, but the guy tells me those tires won't fit. I get the whole, "Your gas mileage will suck and your speedometer blah blah blah", speech. I basically say I don't care about that. I want those tires.

He proceeds to tell me that the REVO's that come in that size are P285/70R17's and they aren't made for trucks and that they will not fit on stock 17" rims for the 04 FX4's.

Did I miss something or is this guy giving me the run around? All I need to know, from people who actually KNOW what they're talking about is:

With a 2.5 levleing kit + 3" blocks for the rear, will these P285/70R17's fit my truck without any issues? I can't get a straight answer out of the Firestone people and personally, I trust you guys here more then anyone else.

Thanks for hearing me vent.

I have Coopers Zeon LTZ 285/60R/18 on my truck and they look and fit beautifully! Look for pictures under “Tires” in the King Ranch forums.

he may be reffering to the width of the tire and the width of the rim? Some shops will only go "by the book" (for liability reasons) and the stock rims are only 7.5" wide. How wide are those tires your planning to run?

He is both right, and totally full of Barbara Streisand...

According to the Bridgestone website, their 285/70R17s are approved for 7.5 to 9.5 inch wide rims. They are however a P metric (Passenger car) and not an LT metric (Light Truck) tire.

Yes they will fit, no they are not a true truck tire.

BUT, if you browse the Bridgestone website, their Passenger car rated Dueller AT Revo is one of two reccomended tires for the late model F150... I guess they think our trucks are nothing but a Crown Vicky with a big trunk...

Well the P285/70R17's say approved rim 7.5 - 9.5 and then it has a measuring rim width of 8.5. Overall section width of 10.5.

So I assume 7.5 is the absolute smallest rim it could fit on? I thought I had a handle on this stuff but this guy at Firestone just scrambled my brain.

Here's the link to the size sheet for the Revo's in case I'm reading it wrong:

Yes, 285's will fit fine on a 7.5 inch wide wheel. The guy at Firestone is just going by what his book says. Personally, I'd suggest going with an LT rated tire.

Damn. Thanks Wandell. Unfortunately, the only LT tire listed for a 17" is LT265/70R17 which is 31.6" in diameter. Guess I'll have to sacrifice the extra inch.

In year's past maybe he designed the steel radial 500, the 721 and the wilderness and was de-moted to sales?

I don't understand the deal with the LT and P rated tires, what passenger car runs tires size p275/65/18? what do they recomend you put these on if they are not supposed to go on a truck? Also, will you get more mileage out of the LT versions or do they just handle heavy loads better?

You are right. No car is gonna use that size. You are also right about load capacity.

You can put a 285/70/17 on a 4WD F150 on the stock suspension with stock wheels. That guy just has his head up his ***.

Man have I been pulling my hair out on this, haha. I don't do hardly any towing or carry any massive loads so I think I'm just going to order the P285/70R17's. With the truck leveled I think the 33's will fill it out much better.

Now I just need to convince the Firestone guy to just shut his yap and order me those tires whether the book says yes or no! haha

I had a set of 285/70/16's on a set of Weld 10" wheels on my stock 2000 Expy with no problems. I tried the LT's and it beat us up on the road. Got rid of them and went with the P rated. Much improved ride.
