98 F150 Rear Brake Line Leak

98 F150 4.6 2wd w/ rear antilock. 190,000 miles
About 4 months ago, the rear steel line form the T-Block to the pass rear wheel was leaking due to a crack in the flare of the steel line. I replaced that line along with the flex line/T-block from the front-parts from Ford parts house.

It's leaking again-from the flare. Haven't removed it yet to inspect. Picking up new lines today.

Anyone else have this problem-with steel line flares cracking

98 F150 Brake line leak

So you think it's from overtightening? I did tighten it more & it leaked worse.

Do you think I need to replace both the brass t-block line also to have two fresh mating surfaces?

It never hurts to have NEW FRESH parts. Thats my opinion.

Especially when these have been around for 10 years.

98 F150 Brake line leak

I'll replace both since I've ordered them but I did replace both the flex line with the T-Block 5 months ago when I had the first cracked flare. Trying to cut costs w/ brakes is not good!

Thanks for the help.

If I may add, use a bit of teflon thread tape (aka: plumbers tape), on the threads when putting it together. And, When it feels tight, stop cranking. LOL No telling how many I have broken with a monkey grip. LMAO!

I replaced them. The line was cracked around the circumference at the base of the flare.

thanks for all the tips.

Is it safe to use teflon tape on these fittings? I thought that it was not recommended due to the fact that pieces of the tape could come loose and cause problems in the master cyl. or other brake lines. Anyone know anything about this? It would be nice to know.

Also a flared nut wrench is needed to prevent stripping off the nuts on the flared fittings.

I have not had any troubles with using the teflon tape. I could see why people would say it might come off, but, if you watch what your doing with it, it will be ok. I don't advise letting it get any lower than the last thread on the fitting and make sure you don't put the tape on backwards.
