Downsizing wheels

I have a 2004 4x4 STX and it came with 255-70-R17 Ameritrac tires. I've found these tires to be complete garbage , and it is next to impossible to find decent 17" tires in Canada at a reasonable price.
I'm seriously looking at downsizing to a 16" tire, of which there is a tremendous variety of choices, but can't quite figure out what size would have the least effect on the speedometer + or -.
Any suggestions?
Oh, and before I forget, Merry Christmas.

i think you mean 16" wheel. and it wont mess with your speedo at all. your tire size is the only thing that would change the speedo. if you go with a 16" wheel i would get a 265/70/16

I thought you couldn't go to a 16" wheel due to the brake calipers but I could be wrong.

You can not go to 16" rims. They will not fit over the calipers. 17" is the smallest and if you have had the brake TSB that replaces rotors and calipers with later builds, some 17" after market will not fit.

Unless you have an 04 Heritage Edition (same body style as the 97-03's), you can't fit 16's.
