The Ford truck TPMS thread

For the new trucks and cars Ford uses a cradle based system where the sensor is installed into a cradle. The cradle is then strapped to the wheel with a band. Ford OE bands and cradles can only be used once, so if you move the sensors you will have to buy new bands and cradles. Also, if you move up in wheel size you will have to buy new bands and cradles. We have an aftermarket band that will fit any wheel 14-26". The system looks like this:

Here's the sensor:

Here's the cradle. You can see the adhesive strip on this one. if removed from the wheel the cradle will slide around the wheel, knocking it out of balance. So when moving wheels you will either have to buy new cradles or clean them and use double sided tape to hold them still.

Here's the cradle banded to the wheel:

Here's all of it together:

If anyone has any questions please feel free to contact me.

Its funny you ask... I just got my new lift, wheels and tires on my 08 the other day. I didnt even know that I had a TPMS (let alone what one was) until I read about them on here just minutes before I left to pic up my truck...

In my case, the warning light comes and goes. If it comes on, its after about 15-20 minutes of driving. Im waiting to get a custom tuner once available for the 08's and Im hoping there is a way to kill the light. Im not going to go through the hassle of buying new sensors and remounting/balancing the tires.

BTW was the mentioned price for the sensors per tire?

i just made a pvc tube put the sensors in the tube, put a shot of air in the tube. the sensors think they are in a tire the light on my dash goes off, and i'm happy. i just put it under my back seat. if the light does come on i just put a quick shot of air in it.

Well there's a new one.....

Well, at least you know we have the parts in case you want to put them back in your wheels.

Couldn't you just use a velcro kind of tape to hold the old cradle in place and then reuse the old sensor with a new band? or just a taped velcro on the cradle and place the sensor in it and not use a band or would the cradle just spin off?

The reason for the adhesive on the cradle is to keep it from spinning on the wheel, throwing it out of balance.

Are these Ford sensors "direct" or "indirect" sensors?

These "strap-ons" Ford uses are direct. They send a RF signal to a receiver that is hooked into the computer.
