It's a scam...Here's how it works.
You'll get a check from the guy that appears to be legit, you'll cash the check and send the tires. Basically, you'll get a call from the bank a few weeks later and the bank will tell you that the check was fraudulent and the funds have been removed from your account.
Chances are, the check you will receive will be in the neighborhood of 5 times what the cost of the tires are. When this happens, the buyer will ask you to cut a check back to him for the difference. Again, it will be a few weeks before his original check will bounce and not only will you be SOL on the tires, but he'll also cash the check you sent him for the difference, so those funds will be lost also. This is an old Craigslist, Autotrader scam.
the Ebay scams are similar but the sellers will put a laughably low "Buy It Now" price on lets say a plazma, 4 wheeler, even an automobile. They'll state that you must email them for the "Buy It Now" price because they are out of the country. Once you email them, you'll get an email back giving you some story about divorce, being transferred overseas or they are selling the item for their boss. The require you wire the money via Western Union and say that Sqauretrade is Ebay's 3rd party escrow service, and that is who will hold the funds until the item is received.
While Squaretrade is affiliated with EBAY, it is nothing more than a resolution service for buyers and sellers who have issues with one another. They do not do any escrowing at all. Don't fall for it. I did my homework on this. Pick-up only and cash is the best way to go on Craigslist...
