285 70 17s - It's Done!!

Hey guys, great forum!
Im planning on some changes to my 2005 f150 fx4, 17x9 AR chamber w teflon, 285/70/17 (haven't picked a brand yet) and a 2.5" leveling kit. My question is with the 285's fit ok before the leveling kit goes on?? Reason I ask is I sold the oem wheels and tires before leveling kit came in. Guy wants tires asap! Can't blame him, he's running on bald tires!! LOL
Also, for looks will the 285 look ok with the leveling kit? Or would I need to go up in size? My tire guy has a pretty good stock on tires, just need to decide on size and brand.
Thanks!!!

285's will fit fine without a leveling kit. As for whether they will look small with a leveling kit, they might... Personally I'd go with 305s instead

I agree. As for tires, I'd look at the BFG AT KO's, Toyo AT's, Nitto Terra Grapplers, Pro COmp Xtreme AT's, **** Cepek Radial FC II's and Mickey Thompson ATZ's.

I am acutally about to put those rims on some Terra Grapplers but probably with 295 or 305.

I have a spare set of 285x70x17 Toyo AT's on 17x9 wheels and I find that they do look a little small on a leveled 4x4. I think a 295 or 305 would look a little better.

Big difference compared to my 315's, I think a 305x65 would look better on these 9" wheels.

Would there be any clearance issues with a 2.5" leveling kit, 17x9 rims and 305/70/17?

Shouldnt be as long as the wheels have at least 5 inches or so of backspacing.

Yeah, I'd want at least 5 inches of backspacing, but 4.5 may work. You will probably have to do some trimming.

with 17x9 rims with 4.5 in of backspacing, those 285s will be rubbing without a leveling kit i do believe. you can put 285's on stock rims w/o a level but aftermarket rims usually require a leveling kit. so what's on your truck now if you've already sold your stock rims and tires and haven't bought new tires yet?

side note: with a 2.5" level, 33x12.5 on 17x9 with 4.75's of backspacing, i didn't need any trimming

I can't figure out how to get my pic in this reply, but look at my photo gallery. I have pics of the new BFG's with stock rims and now I'm running 17x8.5 AR Thugs (teflon coated) with a back space of 5 3/8". Tires are 285/70/17 BFG AT's and they look fine. I was about to purchase a set of 35 inch tires but felt I would have to worry about gearing and minor trimming.
I do have a 2.5" leveling kit also.
Just my 2 cents worth.

It's almost done!

Well, I'm almost done!! So far 17x9 AR Teflon Chamber wheels, 285 70 17 Kumho Venture AT's without leveling. I have some rubbing but I have the Bilstein leveling shocks coming in tomorrow. As soon as I have them on, i will post some pics. As far as looks, it looks fine with the 285's. If the full 2" leveling looks kinda weird, I will be ordering new tires!! LOL
Thanks for all your input on this project guys!!!
