M/T tires and road noise

I am about ready to pull the trigger on some new wheels and tires. I have been contemplating getting M/T tires instead of all terrain. Not going to yank no chains here, I just like the way they look. They look mean. I do go off road but not near enough to warrant these tires. I have been eyeing a set of Toyo Open Country M/T's. I still need to verify they make them in 295/70/17 though. My question is which M/T is the quietest on the concrete? These things are going to cost a good bit of money and I don't want to regret my decision.

Hey Blue....

I totally hear you screamin'..... and I couldn't agree more. MT tires do look really tough, and I'd love to run these, instead of AT's. Noise is my smaller concern though. The bigger problem with MT tires is that they don't last near as long as AT's. I did see some somewhere that were claiming 40K, which would be great for an MT tire, but I hear 10K to 20K is more typical for MT's. And I don't know about you Blue150 (how much you drive, or how many $$$ you make) but I can't afford a new set of tires every year.

Personally, I'm about 99% sure that I'm going with 305/65-18" BFG AT's..... as they look 'pretty good' and they have a tread life of 50K to 70K.... but again, I agree that the MT's look meaner..... which really is the look I'm going for, I just have to set limits.
Heck, I guess even if I did get MT tires..... they still wouldn't look as good as 37"s..... Or an F250, with a 12" lift, and 42" MT tires :-) My point is, the sky is the limit. How high are you able, or willing to climb ?

Peace,
Fish

I don't care for the BFG's. They just don't look aggressive enough for me, I think its the lack of sidewall tread. They are an excellent tire, don't get me wrong. I had a set on my last Silverado. Two thumbs up for performance and longevity. The Toyo's have fantastic reviews online and I am not really worried about milage since I will only drive 30K in 4 years.

Noise is not an issue for me but my wife rides with me and she likes to sleep on our way to work and the last thing I want to hear is b******g about the road noise. LOL

How many miles do you have on yours? Are they loud? Do you have any balancing or pulling to one side issues? This seems to be an issue some people have described.

Toyo's have a reputation as the quietest MT available. The **** Cepek Mud Country is also supposedly very quiet.

Hey Blue.....

Exactly !

I've been thinking about this; How easy would it be for BFG to take the same, great performance, long tread life AT tire that they have been making forever, add little more agressive tread around the sidewalls, call it an AT Extreme, and sell it for 20% more ? I'd buy it.

But the problem is, it's probably a lot smarter for business, to make a tire that looks a LOT more agressive overall, call it an MT, charge the same (or close to it) then make it to only last "half" as long, and they have effectively "doubled" the price ! .....because the majority of people don't look down the road anyway, but rather, only at > what will they cost, right here and now <
This kind of marketing freaking kills me ! I'm sure it kills a lot of others too, who just aren't able to see it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
But, then again, I have to realize that a lot of people don't drive near as much as me. 20K or 30K might mean several years to them. To me it means a "good season" of fishing :-) I buy a vehicle with full intentions of driving the freaking wheels off of that darn thing :-)
Fish,
When is your truck supposed to be ready? Did you get the 4WD or 2WD?
About 10,000 miles on them and they are very quiet for a M/T. I have no balancing, pulling, or uneven wear problems. They're great tires.
I have the Cooper Discoverer STT's and they are just as quiet as the Toyo's. I have 9k on them so far and they are great with a ton of life left to them.
I was looking at those too, they seem to have the same tread design.
If you decide on the Toyos, here is the place I got mine from. They were the cheapest I could find them at the time
