35's and Power Loss

I’m looking at putting 35’s, BFG KM2's, on my truck and was wondering if it is really going to kill the truck on performance. I have already installed a VMP custom tune, CAI, e-fans, and exhaust but will all of these performance gains be lost because of going to the 35’s.

Thanks for the help

Your going to notice a difference between the factory tires and 35's in both power and handling. In my opinion, my truck has enough power with the 35's on it and I have no performance mods. As for the handling, it doesn't take long to get adjusted.

Glad to hear that it isn't a major hit on power and I am running 3:73 gears with LS if that makes any difference,

I have the same gear setup. I think you'll be ok.

Hey SUPERDUTY1999, what kind of MPG difference did you see going with the 35's vs. your OEM tires?

I'm averaging about 14.5 MPG with the 35's. I was getting about 16.5 MPG with the stock tires. But it's nothing that a programmer can't fix.

Thanks! You too! By the way, I love the chrome package with your 150's paint scheme.

I had stock 3.55 gears in my truck so my experience may be different than your's with the 3.73's, but I'll share it with you. When I went to 35's I didn't notice too much of a difference on flat ground, but where I really noticed it was climbing hills. The truck was constantly gear shifting and there was a noticable power loss. I made the switch to Yukon 4.56 gears and no more gear searching and got the power back. I don't do any towing, but if you do then I would think you'll notice the power loss there as well.

I do some towing but not a lot so I guess I'll have to wait and see if the gear swap will be needed. Until then I'll try and squeeze a few more ponies out to compensate for the tires.

In all reality, putting more power to the wheels to try to compensate for the power loss, is actually a bad idea. The increased tire size and weight is going to cause an additional load and stress on the transmission, front and rear differentials, and the transfer case. So putting more power only adds to the problem. However, I think you'll be "okay" if you don't have a lot of hills or don't do any towing. I would upgrade to 4.56s eventually though. It'll take a lot of strain off everything previously mentioned, not to mention you'll be thanking me once you do a WOT pull.
