Burnt Brake Lines?

So I have noticed that when applying the brakes, the rear of my truck makes a wierd grinding type noise. I took it to the dealer and had them look at it two days ago. My truck is an 2005 with 35K miles.

Today I get a call from them saying that since I had my exhaust dualed and the shop put the pipes too close to the brake lines, that the heat from the exhaust has burned my lines and also the fluid in the lines. This caused my calipers to lock onto my roter creating the noise I heard. Due to the aftermarket exhaust repairs will not be under warrenty. They want 800 bucks to replace my roters, calipers, and brake line.

I told them I would pick it up tonight for a second opinion and they warned me that my lines could snap with further use.

So I need to know, are they full of crap?

they put the exhaust to close to the brake lines?? usially brake lines run along the frame and tight to the axle. id be pissed at that exhaust shop but.. ad far as getting anything from them.. i dont know. brake lines are not that hard to replace if you have any mechanical ability. you want those clipped securely and away from hot or moving parts.

I would be pretty "mad" at them as well & I would have thought that they were liable for the damage!

This does however remind me of something that happened to us a few yrs ago. We were on our way to the airport (about 1hr away) to pick up some relations who were coming to stay for a vacation, so we were not in work clothes. About 15 miles away from home some old fart (proably a Buick) pulled out in front of us and I had to take severe action to avoid a collision, we were in a Blazer. Further on there was a loud bang from the rear of the vehicle, I pulled over. On inspection I found that the exhaust had rubbed on the inner edge of the tyre causing it to blow!! The exhaust was rubbing on the tyre because when I braked etc earlier it fractured/broke the pipe thus allowing contact with the wheel. What made it worse was the wheel nuts were not all the same size so the wheel brace was no good!! I can laugh about it now but it was far from funny at the time!

another reason to ask around for good exhaust shops or whatever kind of custom work you want done. a good shop will always have good word of mouth reputation. you could try going back and complaining.

X3 on getting some pictures. If anything towing it back to your house and installing the stuff your self will probably save you around $400-500 and you could upgrade the rotors and pads.

Knowing how most dealers work they are trying to get out of warranty work.

ok guys to give ya'll an update

i took the truck to a auto shop to get a second opinion. when i talked to them about what the dealer said they pretty much just laughed and told me they have never heard of that happening before but said they would take a look at it. i will take some pictures when i get the truck back tomorrow.

i also contacted the muffler shop and talked to the owner who said they would pay for it, if they were in fact at fault so i feel pretty good that i wont be paying for this out of my pocket.

thanks for all the advice.

ill let ya'll know what happens
