I'm Leary of Discount Tire....

Gang, I gotta tell ya. This has absolutely been the most mind-racking tire shopping experience I've had to date. I have almost 150K miles on my 98 F-150, the price of gas is killing me, the economy flat out SUCKS, so I've been agonizing over my tire decision trying to get something I'll like, but at the same time save a buck or two if I can.

I got a price from Discount Tire on the Cooper Zeon LTZ in a 275/60/20 for $755 DELIVERED, and my local tire guy will install them for $48. I got a price on the 275/55/20 TG's locally for $820 out the door. Between those two, I'd got with the Zeon's in a heartbeat except for a couple of things. THERE IS NO DISCOUNT TIRE RETAIL LOCATION ANYWHERE CLOSE TO ME! PLUS, the Zeon's are a proprietary tire made just for Discount Tire. So what happens if I have an issue with one of the tires? I have no local dealer to be a mediator...I'm on my own trying to work it out with Lord knows who at Discount Tire.

I don't know what to do here. I REALLY like the design of the Zeon, they get ridiculously good reviews, and the 275/60/20 is a full inch taller than the 275/55/20 in the TG (I'd go with the taller TG, but I just can't swing the extra 200 bucks right now).

What do you guys think? Let's hear from some of you that have actually purchased from Discount Tire, and others who have input.

Thanks in advance.

I've purchased from DT before but only hardware for my wheel package, no problems there. Have you asked them how they handle warranty claims for people in your situation? That would probably be my make it or break it deal purchase through them based on they're response.

I asked them "what if", and they said they typically will get a phone call from the customer explaining the issue, and they usually ask for a photo of the issue. At that time, they "see if it's a warranty related issue" and if it is, they bill the customer for the new tire(s) and issue credit when the old one(s) are returned. Which kinda sucks because if I DO have a problem, not only do I pay freight to get the tires to me to start with, but I'd have to pay freight to get the replacement tire(s) to me.

I'm probably over-analyzing this whole situation, but I always consider the worst case scenario before making any relatively major purchase.
