offset ? for xd spy 797

im looking at some kmc xd spy's for my truck. i want 20"s and 35's. right now my truck has 2.5" as and AAL's if i decide to put them in. so my two options are

20x9 -12 offset and 5.47 backspacing
or
20x8.5 18 offset and 5.46 backspacing

so my question is, and ive searched what will be the diffrence when they're mounted on my truck? and how will the set in the fender wheels, wider than stock, same as stock???

I don't think you will fit 35's using either of those with only a leveling kit. Paw Paw fit 35x12.50's with only a leveling kit using an 8 inch wide wheel that has 5.5 inches of bs, but it was tight. Personally, I'd go with 33's and the 9 inch wide wheels.

There's not quite enough BS on the 8.5s for them to fit. There are some guys on here that have run 35s on 9 and 8.5" wheels but you have to search pretty hard for them.

Wheel width and backspacing are just as important to fitment as the actual tire size. A lot of people here are running 35's, but almost all of them are using the oem wheels. The few that have aftermarket wheels are using ones with almost the identical width and backspacing as the oem wheels. The wheels you listed have the right amount of backspacing but are a little too wide to fit 35's with only a leveling kit. The 20x8.5's may work if you use the 285/65-20 BFG AT KO's because they are a little narrower than most.

so i understand that it can be done pending on back spacing but what is the limitation... "what" hits "what" "when". does the rim it something, does the tire hit something, at full lock???

When your wheels have an offset and width to push the tires out a certain distance, as you start to turn your wheels either way it can hit on the inner fender closest to the front of your door messing things up unless you trim like I had to, but it was worth it to me.

Well, we know you can fit a 35x12.50 using an 8 inch wide wheel with 5.5 inches of bs. Will that 8.5 inch wide wheel you listed work? Your gonna have to try to find out. My guess is you will have to do a little trimming.

what about nitto or toyo's 275/65/20? they are 34x11. they are rated for a 8" rim. do you think id have a better chance with those than.

Yeah, those or the 285/65-20 (35x11.50) BFG AT KO's would be a better choice.

so if ive done me research correctly offset, to some extent, means nothing if i know the backspacing and rim width. as is if the rim width is Y and the backspacing is X then the offset will ALWAYS be Z. right??

so since the stock 20's are 5.5" back spacing and 7.5" wide then if i use a
9" rim with 4.5" backspacing it wil stick out 2.5" more than stock and
8.5" rim with 4.5" backspacing will stick out 2" more than stock

add the width of the the tire to it and that means 9" rim with 11" tire will stick out 5.5" from wms and an 8.5" rim will stick out 5" from wms.

right???

so i could take a piece of cardboard and cut out a 34x5.5or5" square and hold that centerd to my hub and see if its gonna hit right????

and the above statment is taking for granite the only thing im gonna hit is the outer fenderwell.

withought me taking my tire of and doing this to see for my self What if anything will i have to trim??? the inner fender or the acutal outer sheetmetal of the truck??

Those are the specs for the oem 17's and 18's. The oem 20's are a little wider. If you have to trim, it will probably be the valance or back edge of the fenderwell's plastic.
