A set of 33's?

So I'm in the planning process of getting all my mods done to my 05 screw fx4. I'm gonna be putting (I think, haven't completely decided) a 2" leveling kit with a set of 33's. Anyone suggest a good tire and where to get them from? I was thinking about picking up a set of BFG all terrain, as I don't need anything with heavy tread for off roading. But I am set on the 33's, I see many people here run on 35's!

I swear by Discount Tire. They've always treated me great and they'll price match or beat it. So if you want to go through them, just do some research first and see what sort of prices you can find. Then call them up and say you'd like a set of tires. Tell them what you can get them for and they should work with you. You can also ask if they'll give you anything for your old tires. Won't be much, but anything helps. Unless you have someone willing to buy them from you for a decent price.

As for the tires, can't go wrong with BFG's. Great tire. I am running the Nitto Terra Grappler All-Terrain in a 33" on my 02 4x4 and love them. Just my .02, if you can fit 35's, I'd go 35's. Especially the newer body style with a leveling kit, they just look hungry for slightly bigger tire. Unless you've seen one with 33's and you know you'll like it, I'd consider the 35's if they'll fit. Just my opinion. Hope this helps.

I do like the look of the 35's too, they look awesome, but I've read around here they take a bit of performance from your truck being heavier, etc...I don't tow or offroad alot so that's why I just wanted to do 33's. Hopefully they'll give me something for my tires as I have rough 75% treat left! What did you guys pay for yours?

When I purchased my Nittos, I also purchased new wheels. The setup I have is 20x10 Motto Wheels and the 305/55/20 Nittos (33"). Obviously with a 20" cutout you're going to pay more than say for a 17" cutout. My whole package was $2100 out the door.

As for trading in your old tires, with 75% tread left, you might be better off trying to sell them. I doubt Discount Tire will give you more than say $15 a tire, but you can ask anyway.

What size wheel are you going with? Feel free if you have any other questions. Oh, I have roughly 35,000 miles on my Nittos with plenty of life left. Can easily see me hitting 50,000 on them. You'll get 50,000 and then some with the BFG's too.

Wow, $15 bucks a tire is joke...I actually want to keep my stock wheels, I love the way they look so I'm gonna put that money elsewhere.

I'm pretty sure I'm gonna go with 33's, since I can get them to fit on my stock wheels. I need to figure out if I'm going to do a 2" or 2.5" lift kit. I was just looking on Ebay and found some BFG all terrain's for around 700 bucks with free shipping...and 35's around $800! I looove the look of the 35's but thats just too much rubber for me.

Yeah, they're not really in the business of trading tires I suppose. But I could be wrong. Thats a pretty good price you found. Are they from a person or an online store selling through ebay?

Stock 05 FX4 rim is an 18" wheel right? Are you looking at the 285/65/18's or the 305/65/18's?

Another advantage to Discount Tire is lifetime rotation and balance and usually lifetime replacement on an unrepairable tire. So you might call them and tell them how much you found them for. They'll probably ask where you saw that price but just tell them. I did and they had heard of the place I was shopping. I had heard and they confirmed that the place was sketchy. Sold reject tires, but Discount still matched the price.

I guess I could just trade in the tires to help eliminate the cost of having them mounted, if they would do that( or les schwab or anythign other tire store). It's from Patriot Tire and Wheel on Ebay, with a GREAT track record. The listing for the 33 12.5 R15 is for a set of BFG All Terrain T/A for $708. I'm not sure if it's the 285's or the 305's, doesn't say and I don't know enough about tires to know the difference.

I BELIEVE the stock wheels are 18", not sure I've heard of 17" but don't know if that's for XLT, STX, etc. I'd know for sure if I had my truck, but I'm picking it up next month when I come home from Iraq. I'm just trying to get all my ducks in a row to get everything ASAP. I'll definitely have to see if Discount or Schwab will price match!

Just realized that the R15 is the wheel size, in which case those tires won't fit my truck

In regards to the initial pricing from that ebay store. Thats pretty much the exact price Discount Tire can get those tires for before any sort of wheeling and dealing. But as you said a 15" won't work on your truck. But his price was good!

I'm pretty positive the FX4 wheels for your year is 18". The stocks on the 04 and up (XLT, XL, etc. ) were 17" I'm pretty sure. So the FX4 always gets a little beefier wheel. My 02 FX4 had 17" stock, whereas most of the other models came with 16".

I think for 18" BFG's you're looking at around $1200 through Discount before any sort of negotiating. As for the sizes I mentioned, the BFG's and the Nitto's are listed in metric units as 285/65/18. To figure out the overall tire diameter you can do the following:

The first number is the tread width in millimeters (the footprint). I would convert it to inches since you're going to need to eventually anyway. (285mm = 11.220in)
The second number is the ratio of the sidewall height to the tread width. (In our example. The sidewall height would be 65% of the tread width. Translates: 11.220in x .65 = 7.293in = the height of the sidewall).
The third number is your wheel diameter (18in)
So now to get the diameter, we take our sidewall height (7.293in) and multiply it by 2 (=14.586in) and then add the wheel diameter (18in)
14.586in + 18in = 32.586in (The reason we multiply the sidewall height by 2 is because you have sidewall above and below the wheel when looking at the diameter)

The 305/65/18 is roughly a 33.6" tire with a thicker tread (footprint). If going with BFG and want to stay around 33" thats the one I'd go with. If you go with Nitto, you'll save probably $200 or so on the set of 4 for that size. They offer slightly different sizes though, so you'll have to go with either the 275/70/R18 or the 325/60/R18. With these 2 the 275 is a little taller than the 325 but also a bit narrower. But the 325 might be hard to fit on the stock wheel since they usually aren't very wide.

Sidenote: The size you mentioned initially, 33/12.5/15, thats all in inches. 33 is your diameter of the tire, 12.5 is your tread width, 15 is your wheel diameter. These are usually far less accurate and you should look at the tire manufacturers website to get the actual dimensions.

Hope all this info helped a bit. If you have any other questions, I'll do my best.

Are you in Iraq serving in the military? If so, God Bless and thanks for all you do.

You can run 17 or 18" wheels on your truck and get tires for a decent price. A 305x65x18 BFG AT would work great or a 285x295 0r 305x70 Nitto AT in a 17" would also look great. Nitto's usually cost less than the BFG's. Toyo and Pro Comp make some nice tires also in a all terrain.

PawPaw,

I think the 35's would look great, but he wants to keep the stock rims which are 18's and seems to want to go with a 33" tire.

I also agree that Toyo makes a great tire. I had ProComps on the same truck I'm driving now and must say that I like the Nitto Terra Grapplers a whole lot more.

Thanks for the school lesson, learn something new everyday! I do love the look of the 35's but want to keep my stock wheels and I won't be doing any extra lifts besides a leveling kit so I dont have a need for the 35's. Do the 35's hinder you much in performance/economy? I'm still pretty sure I'm goin with the BFG All Terrain A/T KO 305/65/18... Thanks again for all the help!

Also, if I were to go w/ 35's, what's the minimal lift for clearance?

No problem on the help. Lord knows I've received more than my share on these forums. Question for you, what size engine do you have and do you know your gear ratio?

As for the minimum lift, since you're keeping the stock rims, just your 2 or 2.5" leveling kit will be enough to fit 35's. If you went aftermarket wheels, you'd probably have to go a bit higher. Keeping the factory wheels is a plus there. You might get a little rub on full turn, but not bad.
